So, let me get this straight...
 
.... if I have an HDTV with no HDMI port, I can't use HD-DVD or Blu-Ray at
it's full res because of copy-protection?

Do the movies on the shelves have this feature enabled?

If you only have component inputs, yes that's right if the feature is enabled on a
particular disc. Here's what I said about this in June:

I don't know because I refuse to invest in either format until the format war is over.
Maybe other posters know. My guess is it isn't enabled on the few releases out there yet or
it's very rare.

except that so far no movie company is using the encryption mode, meaning
the components work fine

So, let me get this straight...
 
The copy protection is not currently enabled on any released titles and
likely won't be for some time, My HD-A1 has a sweet picture through both
HDMI/DVI and Component.

Depends on when

Now... sure, component is enabled on all HD/BR discs

Future... non-hdmi will be resolution limited on HD/BR discs, depending
solely on Hollywood's paranoia
