Recording hdtv to regular vcr

I recently upgraded to Adelphia/Time Warner's HD/DVR box explorer
8000hd and I have found that I'm unable to record live television to my
vcr as I had when I used the SD signal. My hdtv is on input video 6
and my vcr is on channel 3 (two different video inputs).

What are my options to record live television? Do I need to switch my
box each time to get hdtv signals and switch it back if I want to
record anything? I contacted my cable company and they said that I
should get a vcr that has component inputs and run my cable through
there. The back of my cable box has a video archive output but that
would only allow me to record by telling my dvr to copy to vcr -- an
extra arduous step if I want to record a game or television show that I
know that I want to keep. I hope that someone can help, I would just
love to view the hdtv signal and it matters less about the quality as
long as I can record something without having to switch the settings in
my box. thanks so much for anyone's assistance!

What is video input 6? If it is composite video, you are not getting HD. Use
the component input on the TV.
and my vcr is on channel 3 (two different video inputs).

Why? Connect the composite out of the DVR to the video input of the VCR.
Best way to do this, and be able to use the TVGuide on Screen to control the
record times, is to record to the DVR, and later transfer to the VCR. The
DVR will have that option. If you are watching the same channel that you
want to record, just hit RECORD on the VCR.

An advantage of first recording to the DVR is that if you decide you want to
record a show after you have been watching it for 10 minutes, the DVR will
record the whole show from the beginning. ( So long as the DVR was tuned to
that channel from the beginning)
