Using the HP Digital Entertainment Center z558, over the air HDTV can
be recorded. However, when it is played on the PC using Windows Media
Player, the file is super interlaced.

Especially when it is action movie, or even with Jay Leno, the
interlacing is very apparent... almost like no de-interlacing is
done... wonder if that is a fixable problem? Maybe using Media
Center XP on the other computer will work.... just that I have XP Home
all along on that PC and it seems rather major upgrade if just to watch
TV and upgrade the OS to another version. (media center edition).

OK, clue me in. What is 'super' interlaced?

We use ATI MutiMedia Center with an HDTV Wonder to record OTA HDTV
since Nov '04. No difference between the PC and the SIR-T165 set top
box.

For playback on PCs, VLC Media Player has several deinterlace options
along with many other filters not found in several MS or fee based
products.

ah, that just means "seriously interlaced".
i almost wanted to type "super duper interlaced"... probably even more
confusing.

Read it as, "very pronounced interlacing when playing back video."

Another thumbs-up for VLC player, an amazing-good free playback program.

Ok so I guess that he is saying that there is very poor de-interlacing
motion compensation being applied by his graphcis card hardware acceleration
when used by his Decoder.
If the program plays fine uisng MCE on the same PC then maybe his is using
Overlay mode instead of VMR9 with Media player.

And THIS clarifies how? Are you trying to say the fields got reversed ?
Diagonal lines would turn into someting resembling saw teeth. Is that
it?
