Topfield PVR includes the facility as standard to disable RED DOT ****.

So it isnt a licencing issue and the companys who make freeview boxes
could add the option if they wanted ? .

I don't know about the politics of it but the Toppy is unusual in that 1,
its TAP API means loads of clever people write new code for it, and 2, the
Koreans who make it don't give a **** about ITV's whims since the device is
aimed at a global market not the UK.

The reason Topfield added a way to disable "interactive" / RED DOTs is the
BBC's dodgy code was crashing boxes and since they don't trust broadcasters
dodgy code, they felt it was better to give us the chance to disable it than
have 100s of us sue them.

None at all, and some (certainly the PVR type) allow you to disable MHEG
processing, which elimnates the red dot entirely. I haven't seen one in over
a year. It also disables a few other things of course, but none of those
were worth having in the first place.

No idea about vanilla Freeview boxes.

As a freeview box is only £30 i'd happily spend the £30 to replace my
current freeview box for one that had a option to disable the red dot .

Anyone with a Freeview PVR might like to try recording a programme
in which red dots appear, and seeing if they have vanished from the
playback.

If you have a basic Freeview player, it'll want to put all sorts of
crap on your screen, including EPGs and volume bars when you press
the appropriate remote control button. These will ruin any recording
that is being taken straight from a Freeview box to an analogue
DVD recorder.

If you have a PVR, the same user-selected graffiti will appear on
your screen, but not on your recording.

In this respect, it's very much like the difference between recording
the output of a modern, menu-driven TV with a camcorder, as opposed
to using a VCR to record the input.

It also includes the facility to skip adverts with ease.

It also records two channels at once whilst watching a third channel or
playback.

The only things it does not do is 1, make tea, 2. give blow jobs.

So it's OK for rimming?

Bill

I'm sure someone is working on a downloadable TAP for all the above.

;-)

I don't remember seeing it on my Humaxes , nor setting any option to remove
it

You can't disable it, but you can get it so that it goes off screen after a
minute (or two). Which is the next best thing I suppose.

I'm sure the firmware can be hacked. Hunt around the small ads in
electronics magazines. A google search returns a number of hits.

What did you search for? Anything that can get rid of that **** would
make someone a lot of money. Especially now they have started using it
as a way of displaying paid for advertising on screen during
programmes.

freeview firmware hacks red dot

returns a number of interesting suggestions including

http://forum.logofreetv.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=162
http://logofreetv.org/render.asp?mode=hardware#REDDOT
http://www.pacelink.co.uk/digimemo.htm

I have no idea if they work - no freeview signal here and Sky can eat ****
and die.

The old analogue Sky boxes used to have separate scart outputs for TV
and VCR. The VCR output had none of the ****e that was added to the TV
output, even if you plugged it into your TV. The only reason Sky
haven't done something similar with the digital boxes is because the
advertisers wouldn't like it. They have recently started having large
on screen adverts via "press red" during programmes. Sky shills are
claiming this is just a mistake, but it will be a mistake that happens
more and more often.

No such thing as analogue Sky boxes, there were however analogue
satellite boxes.

In the argos catalog about 1-2 years ago there was a bottom of the range
bush that didnt have any interactive options and therefore no red dot .

Not suggesting the interactive should be done away with - but am
seggesting a option to disable the red dot if wanted .

You know, until I read the above line I thought you meant an entirely different
red dot.

Would any of you lot also be quite willing and happy to spend £30 on a
new freeview box if it had a option to disable the red dot ? .

The benefits of tv via pc. I can't stand to see it on my parents Sky setup.
