Sky In France

Hi All.

I have a couple questions relating to Freesat.

I'm going to be putting in a dish and box in France. I'm pretty sure I'm on
top of that.

With no card - I'll get all the FTA channels I know. How will the receiver
determine what ITV region I'm in? I've read that this selection comes from
the Sky Cards.

FTV - I know about getting a card from Sky, but I've also read that using an
old dark blue previous-subscription card would work. I have a couple old
cards, but I'm being told by a friend that :

"You should be able to ring for the card from the UK and activate it in the
UK but do not leave it out of the system for more than 5 days when bringing
it over as they sometimes deactivate." He refers to the Freesat card from
Sky.

Is this true? If it is, then how do old subscription cards work? I'm getting
a couple second-hand decoders with remotes and old subscription cards(dark
blue ones)...will they work for the FTV?

I don't think that the old cards will work any more, if you mean old
with the yellow satellite dish on them. For the sake of GBP20 I would go
for a new Freesat card. As for ITV region, you'll probably end-up with
the region whose address you used in the UK to get the card - obviously
not that in France. Other ITV regions can be accessed using details on
Lyngsat and stored in 'Other Channels' on your $ky box.

In my experience, it takes several weeks for a card to become
deactivated, but if it's been previously authorised it sorts itself out
after a day or so.

You'll probably need to get a receiver up and running in the UK so that
you can buy a card and get it authorised. Thereafter I think that you
should be OK in France.

Thanks for your help there. If however we decided not to get a Freesat card,
again, how would the ITV region get set?

I believe the card coming with the box is a current card ie. The latest card
used by Sky, with subscription cancelled. Can we use this to decode Channel
4/5/Sky 3? If it works, I assume regionalisations would be whatever address
the card was previously registered at.

Clem - what do you mean with the above statement? Current sub cards? Freesat
cards? If they're ex-subsubscription, does this mean they'll start 'working'
again?

For ITV region, I think that the default is ITV London. That's certainly
true of BBC One. I have a subscription-cancelled card and that works
fine for C4, C5, $ky Three etc. - no worries there.

As per my previous post. If you cancel a $ky subscription it 'defaults'
to Freesat status - you get C4, C5 and $ky Three. I have two boxes with
cancelled subscription cards and get these channels without problem.
Unlike DTV/Freeview, you won't however get E4 or More4, but Film4 will
be OK.

It's a shame that a card is needed for C4/C5, and a subscription for
E4/More4, but I'm sure that this will change in time. I presume that by
having the 'Freesat' card (or its equivalent) we'll get the two new C5
channels starting later this year - fingers crossed!

Cheers for your help Clem. I have no idea where these previous subsription
cards were originally registered. I onll really want them for 4/5/Sky 3
anyway. We can easily find or add our regional channels for 1/3

Without a card you end up with BBC 1 London on 101, BBC 2 England on 102,
and ITV Central West on 103

Is this true?

See the FAQ.

A card may lose activation after several weeks out of a box, but it
will be reactivated within hours of being reinserted into a box.

Boxes with no card default to the BBC/ITV region of the last used card
or London if the box has been reset since the last card was inserted.

Only for the Beeb. Reset the box, and 103 gets mapped to ITV Central W
