Do I need an upconverting DVD player?

If I but a new HDTV, should I buy an upconverting DVD player? Do these
things really improve the image?

Your TV may upconvert the signal by itself. Check into it. If it does not
then the only DVD player that works wonders is the Oppo

Although I don't have one, you may want to consider the Toshiba HD-A1. In
addition to being an excellent upconverting player it also plays the new
HD-DVD format.

My Samsung DVD player puts out a nice clean 480p signal. My TV doubles
that internally to display it to at least EDTV standards.

because the DVD player has direct access to the MPEG encoded stream
that is recorded on the DVD, it can do a better job of up-converting
than if you handed an analogue signal to a TV set.

Also note, unless you have an older up-converting DVD player such as
the SONY DVD NS7SP the up-converted output will be available on
the HDMI.

It is prohibited for a new DVD player to have analog output with greater
than 750 X 480 resolution.

I can second the praise given the Oppo player. I've got one with my
34" Sony crt HD set and it's marvelous.
