The only true 1080p rear proj HDTV on the market today!

Hi folks,

I finally found a true 1080 horizontal screen resolution HDTV rear
projection set based on the LCoS technology.
After an aggravating search of other companies trying to misinform the
public into buying sets that do not truly display
1080i resolutions (or 1080p signals for that matter), my search is over (for
now) ending with Toshiba's 57HL83.
Whew!
It is about $2000 more than I want to spend, but is the only 1080p RP set in
the world.
http://www.bigbangelectronics.com/pr...5&pf_id=57hl83
The only link I could find that has a price on it. Toshiba's site, for some
strange reason, does not even have this model on it!

Actually, the new 82" WL-82913 LCoS set from Mitsubishi is 1080p. Probably
about $20K more than you want to spend, but it does scan at 1080p.

Of course, for a set that size, the extra money also gets you a construction
crew to do whatever it takes to get it into your house.

Seems like I've read several times that many sets, projection and otherwise,
don't really display the 1080i picture in full resolution. How can you find
out how many lines your TV is actually capable of displaying? I have a
Philips direct view 30"... i think it's the 30pw9817.

Yeh, yeh, yeh. Be sure and let us know when you find something broadcasting
1080p.
Hardware ain't worth a damn without any software.

They aren't even broadcasting anything that fully uses 1080i either, capable of
1080x1900 but maximum being shown today is more like 1080x1400. By time you
see something in 1080x1900 the set will already be outdated.

Despite all of the comments about nobody supplies 1080p (except possibly an
HDCAM), if the unit upconverts well from 480i/720p/1080i, the results could
put anything else to shame including plasma units. Virtually all of the
other hdtv units today cannot display a true 1920 X 1080 pixel screen. The
second best is probably plasma and dlp units that do 720p. On the other
hand the 720p units are a little cheaper.

Richard R,

I'm not into games, but I believe some of the (X-Box?) games are in
1080P format...

Only problem is that the set in question is vapourware for now.

This is true. Xbox has a handfull of 720p games and a couple 1080i games.
You can find complete lists of HDTV options in games over at

I was highly interested in proj until I read it cost more than $60 for
the bulb replacement. I think if you use it often enough the bulb
will blow and to be replaced.

I've also gone back to candles since I've discovered that if I use my lights
long enough they burn out! :)
Come on now. You get X number of hours out of a lamp, that's the cost of using
the projector.

It's here on their website -
http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/televisi...?model=57HLX82

Anyone know if this model will be released or available in the UK? We poor
*******s in Europe are getting our first satellite HDTV channel on the 1st
Jan - then maybe one or two channels in the following year if we're lucky.

Scot November 16th 03 10:24 AM

Toshiba has halted production of their LCoS sets. They can't get any LCoS
chips from their supplier Hitachi.
