Filmfour for free

Funny I just started subscribing to Filmfour last week and in a month,
it will be free...

But I wonder if the film selections will be the same or if it will be
less interesting as freeview?? On their website, there was no schedule
for films available starting the day of the changeover....

Inevitable that they'll concentrate more on Hollywood blockbusters
(they've just gone and bought a huge package of such movies, in fact)
and the more thoughtful, intelligent (i.e. low-rating) movies will be
severely sidelined or dropped entirely.

As long as they keep films in the correct aspect ratio I'll watch otherwise
forget it. I've a sneaky suspicion they pander to the 'no-black-bars'
brigade and crop 'scope films to 16:9 though :-(

Film 4 will now have the added extras of advertising breaks during the movies
thus giving the opportunity to put on the kettle or go to the loo.

Are you being cynical or are they indeed going to have ad breaks???
Grrrrr

And I hope no Hollywood crap - the only things I like on there are the
obscure foreign films and cult films....

This gumf is from the site, there's a fair bit of Q&A. the relevant
bit is near the end so I'll paste that here first

"Will the FilmFour free-to-air service carry any advertisements during
films?
Yes, like most other free-to-air channels the new FilmFour channel
will have advertising breaks.

We are passionate about films and it is in our interest to show them
in the best possible environment, so we will do our utmost to handle
advertising breaks as carefully as possible. "

When will FilmFour go free-to-air?
July 2006.

Why is FilmFour going free-to-air?
It is Channel 4's ambition to widen its digital offering, so that a
greater range of programming is available within digital homes.

Over the years we have developed a strong and valuable film channel,
which we feel should be available to as wide an audience as possible.
We are therefore making it available to everyone with digital TV.

I’m currently a FilmFour subscriber, what happens now?
Nothing, FilmFour continues as a subscription channel until July 2006
and you will continue to receive all your FilmFour channel(s) in the
same way.

Will it still cost the same until July?
Yes. It will stay at £7 a month for Sky digital subscribers and £6 a
month for other providers.

When will I stop paying?
The channel will stop being a paid-for channel in July 2006. You will
continue with your normal subscription payments until then.

How will I be informed about the change?
All FilmFour subscribers will be informed by their digital TV
provider. If you have any specific queries relating to your billing
then contact your digital TV Provider.

If you are a Sky digital subscriber then call 08702 40 40 20, Ntl:home
call 0845 045 0020 or Telewest call 08450 142 0220.

Will this announcement mean changes to the quality of the programming
prior to July?
No, there will be no changes until the new free-to-air channel
launches in July.

Every night from 6pm, FilmFour will continue to screen over 100 of the
best hand-picked films a month, from the best of British and American
cinema to foreign language and cult classics.

Until July, we are continuing to focus on giving our existing
subscribers the best possible service. In the upcoming months,
highlights will include:

The UK TV premieres of Dead Man's Shoes and The Assassination of
Richard Nixon in our Thrillers season in March.

In April we will be screening the entire season of Studio Ghibli
Japanese animated films in their original language versions alongside
channel premieres such as Cabin Fever and Jason Vs Freddy.

There is a Todd Solondz triple bill of Happiness, Storytelling and the
UK TV premiere of Palindromes.

Other upcoming UK TV premieres include Tropical Malady, The Woodsman,
Notre Musique, Calvaire, Untold Scandal, Primer, R-Point, One Night In
Mongkok and Vital.

Will all three channels - FilmFour, FilmFour +1 and FilmFour Weekly -
be available on the free-to-air service?

For some subscribers, FilmFour Weekly is currently available as part
of a paying package. There are no plans to continue with this service
when FilmFour moves to a free-to-air service. However, we will keep
the range of films we are currently showing across our three channels
and they will all be part of the new channel schedule.

There are currently no plans to launch any other channels.

How will I receive FilmFour?
The channel will launch on Freeview for the first time and will
continue to be available to all cable and satellite viewers at no
additional cost. On digital satellite, the FilmFour Channel will be
available to freesat viewers as well as Sky digital subscribers.

Will I need to re-programme my digital box?
Most existing digital TV viewers with relatively new boxes won’t need
to do anything. However, some may encounter a few problems and may
need to re-programme their box. Full details will be posted on our
site closer to the launch.

On which channel will FilmFour be available?
Channel numbers per platform are still to be confirmed. More details
will follow on this later in the year.

How many FilmFour channels will there be?
The main FilmFour channel will be available on all platforms. A
one-hour time-shifted channel will be available on Sky digital and may
also be available on other platforms.

There are currently no plans to launch any other channels.

What will the new programming be like?
The new free-to-air service will screen great films every day from
3pm. The channel will offer a broader range of titles than any other
UK film channel, with classics earlier in the day giving way to modern
Hollywood output and the best of US and UK independent cinema during
the peak period, and foreign language and cult cinema late at night.

Can you give me more details about the programming?
Not for the moment but more information will follow on later in the
year.

Does this mean that FilmFour will be more mainstream?
No, the channel will continue to screen a broad range of films with a
mix of major Hollywood movies and great British films, both new and
old, alongside timeless classics and cult favourites.

Will you still be showing foreign language and extreme films - if so
when?
Yes, these films will remain a key part of our schedule. More details
will follow on this later in the year.

Will the FilmFour free-to-air service carry any advertisements during
films?
Yes, like most other free-to-air channels the new FilmFour channel
will have advertising breaks.

We are passionate about films and it is in our interest to show them
in the best possible environment, so we will do our utmost to handle
advertising breaks as carefully as possible.

What about the FilmFour VOD (video-on-demand) service?
As well as launching the new free-to-air film channel, Channel 4 is
also planning the launch of a FilmFour branded video-on-demand
subscription service on various media platforms such as broadband,
mobile and cable.

When will the FilmFour VOD service be available?
More details will follow on this later in the year.
