The Fox Saturday afternoon baseball games are usually (if not all) are
widescreen SD, not true HD. And not very good looking widescreen SD for
the games that I have seen.

Not if it's on Fox, it's not HD. They will show the All-Star game on
HD and the playoffs and World Series, but not regular season games.

So how does one determine whether it is true HD or widescreen SD without sitting
1 foot from the screen? My StarChoice satellite receiver has a number of "HD"
channels, and my Sony XS955 will clearly state the broadcast is 1080i, when it
appears to me to be not.
Remember when stereo came out--there was this neat little red light that let you
know when a broadcast was being sent stereo?

And people try to tell me that the general public will want BluRay or HD-DVD
for the improved picture quality...

Wide angle shots make it obvious...the crowd/background on true HD is
quite a bit sharper.

Also, look for moire patterns. A lot is a sign that the sampling rate
is too low to pick up all the resolution that is available in the real
life picture.
