Netgem boxes

Hi,

What has happened to the Netgem boxes? I did a look around today
regarding software updates etc, and the sites seemed to have no real
activity since the middle of October 2005 - have they moved somewhere
else or something?

Thanks.
Andrew.

It's gone up but now does include the TUTV facility, the older ones
had the capability but you had to buy the CAM hardware.

TUTV does not appeal to me, why they think I should pay them £20 for
the priviledge of then paying £7.99 monthly I do not know. If they
drop that £20 initial fee I may give it a try.

Not quite; all BT branded iPlayers can use TUTV cards as well. You're
thinking of the Netgem branded iPlayers, which require a CAM.

There are only two real differences between the Netgem iPlayer and the
BT rebranded iPlayer;

1) The Netgem iPlayer has a CAM interface and no card reader; the BT
rebranded one has a card reader but no CAM interface.

2) The BT rebranded iPlayer has extra hardware to do CLID, the Netgem
one doesn't.

We now however have the Netgem Plus, which certainly has the CLI
hardware and can do SMS (see latest firmware), however not sure about
the card slot on the new models.

I believe that the iPlayer+ hardware is actually exactly the same as the
BT rebranded iPlayer - if that's the case it will have the card reader
but no CAM hardware.

The subject came up on the Netgem boards when the 7-day EPG was being
"discussed" as regards the iPlayer+ - for a while, only the iPlayer+ had
it, and there were rumours that there wasn't enough memory on the
earlier versions to allow the 7-day EPG software to be added. I seem to
recall that Netgem eventually offered the information that the iPlayer+
and the BT rebranded iPlayer were the same hardware, and the EPG
firmware eventually became available. I could be misremembering though!

The iPlayer+ is still going strong. It's still a fine piece of kit, and
with email/Internet, there's nothing to touch it at the moment. The
makers, NetGem have announced a partnership with Red Bee Media and
Microsoft to get a new HD, IPTV version out there, and there's recently
been the launch of a new NetGem box to work with Namesco's TVMax
service. There's some more info at

There's an active user forum at
http://www.radioandtelly.co.uk/cgi-b...?board=iplayer, if
you want to catch up with the latest.
