Power Conditioners Worth the Money?

Are power conditioners worth the money? I bought a Panamax for $250. The
sales guy said it would improve audio and video quality. Thoughts?

Thank you,

Kevin

It's a little late to be asking the question, don't you think? Or can
you still return it?

Is your AC power particularly bad? Many spikes, dips, sags and surges?
Does your neighbor on the same side as the pole pig run a machine shop
or welding business?

If not, then I don't think you'll see any audible or visible benefit
from a power conditioner.

On the other hand, such things might protect your equipment from damage
from the infrequent transients that might come down the line.

Since you bought it, it would seem that you're in the perfect position
to answer the question.

When I lived in VERY suburban Halifax, NS, my neighbour across the road
on the same pole peg had a large shop where he worked on heavy equipment
(welding, etc.). Not only that, some of the local lowlifes were in the
habit of shooting out an insulator on the high tension lines in Spryfield
whenever they wanted to steal cigarettes from a grocery store.

I used to run just about everything on a UPS that was hair-trigger.
First sign of a spike and we were on batteries. And that sucker could
handle surges. The book that came with it said that, if it ever blew its
own fuse, I should call the power company immediately because the pole
peg would also have failed!

But here in BC, I've seen outages but no real surges. I'm in downtown
Chilliwack and all I've really found necessary is a small UPS for the
computer so it can save its status and exit when (not if) the power
fails.

I have noticed decided improvement in the stability of my HD satellite
receiver. It used to lock up or lose the audio regularly. Now it never does.
I'm in the country with frequent brown-outs, spikes and momentary power
loses.

Kevin,

I also own the Panamax that you have. I have had it for about one year now
and think it is well worth the relatively small price you paid for it. I
look upon it as an insurance policy that will protect for many years to
come. There are power conditioners out there that cost far more,
particularly those made by Monster.
I do not think they are worth the money except in extenuating circumstances.

Did he give you a jar of KY with it.:-)

A regulated UPS for $100 or less would have been better. At least with it
you could still watch TV for a while if you lost power.

Well, I can't say about power conditioners, but I did drop just under
half what you did on a Panamax surger protector about 2 years ago (when
I got my Denon 2900 DVD player) and have been very pleased with it. A
quality product I would buy again.

I think you probably paid a bit too much for it .... but overall it was a
good purchase.

Your expensive hi-tech stuff is vulnerable to power issues. Everyone talks
about surges and spikes but there is much more danger from power lags and
dropouts. Ever see a light bulb dim and then come back?

That's rough on the toys .....

Better to buy it get it installed and not have to worry about it.

You done good
