Moving a Plasma TV

I have a 42" plasma tv currently on a stand. We're moving at the end
of the month, and I'm getting really scared to transport the tv. The
new house is probably around 30 miles away. I have a F-150 truck, and
a Ford Freestyle.

I understand that the tv needs to remain vertical, so I was thinking
since it has a stand, putting it accross the back seat of the truck and
have my wife or someone sit back with it to make sure it doesn't fall
over. Does anyone have a better recomendation than this? We won't be
using movers for this, so I need to come up with something wonderful
and drive carefully.

Thanks!

also one more thing, unfortunately i do not have the original box. I
always keep these for everything, but I wasn't home when the tv was
delivered, and my wife didn't think to stop them before they cut the
box up to open it.

Wrap it with a heavy blanketand situate so it can't move. No matter what
happens, leaving it up to somebody to make sure it doesn't move isn't the
greatest idea.

I understand that the tv needs to remain vertical,

I'm curious about that statement. Is that true? What would happen if it were
to lay flat?

And of course all the people involved in shipping it in the first place know
what "this side up" means. You know...the folks who think "Fragile" is a city
in Italy!

I've heard that about DLP (projection) sets, but not LCD or Plasma. In
fact, I saw a stack of LCD sets (boxed) with the screens obviously
lying in the flat position.

The plasma TV has a very large sheet of glass on the front supported
only at the edges. If you lay it flat, it may crack if the vibrational
shock is strong enough. The glass is much stronger standing vertically.
It is ok to lay a plasma flat on the floor when setting up, so long as
it is done carefully and put onto a soft surface.

For moving a plasma, I would recommend the OP first put a soft blanket
over the front glass and then a large flat piece of cardboard or several
layers of box material (from collapsed boxes or whatever) to protect the
front glass from any sharp objects. Transport it standing up but with
padding under it to protect it from shocks. Do NOT skimp on packing
material. There have too many photos posted on the plasma/LCD forum at
www.avsforum.com of cracked plasma TVs delivered by the shipping
companies to be anything less than very careful.

If it were mine, I would do as Alan suggests but instead of cardboard,
I'd get a piece of plywood (or particle board) larger than the front of
the unit, pad the back as well and strap it to the wood. Now strap the
assembly to the side wall of the moving van or strap it to a piece of
furniture for support. Home Depot sells 2'x4' panels for $10-$20 which
is small enough for most any car. If you don't have a table or Skil
saw, you can have Home Depot guys cut it down for a few bucks. If you
think the wood is too much money or work, remember what you paid for
the set.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Really appreciate it. If this tv
breaks, I know there's no way I'm getting another one, so yeah I'm
quite nervous and ready to do whatever I need. I'll let you know how
it went in 2 weeks.

Wrap it, and the stand, with a clean soft cover, and then with a heavier
blanket or quilt. Tape it securely, put it into the back seat of your
vehicle and wrap the seat belts around it so it does not move. Vertically
transported is the requirement, as posted - the glass will fail eventually
if shipped laying down. I personally like the Plywood idea, sounds like
overkill but again, it's your set.
Carefully package it, carefully handle it, then when you get to your new
location, enjoy it once again!!
