You would install from a single CD like Knoppmyth. It installs a somewhat bare debian based linux system along with all required MythTV modules for you. you don't need to know anything about Linux to install it. it will ask you questions and you answer. Takes about 15 minutes maybe. So go ahead and screw it up a few times.:-) Hit the reset button and start over. Ahh.... very cool!! I knew that it ran under Linux but didn't know it was THAT easy to install Tell me.... could I make such a Myth machine out of a portable laptop? I know we've talked in past abt this but I've forgotten sorry. My objective is to have a HD TV with PVR functions that is "portable" and compact such as for cabin or RV living |

Yeah, that shouldn't be too hard. You'd need a supported USB tuner though and a fairly fast CPU for the display. I think the Dvico USB HDTV5 tuner is supported. They all may be. I haven't invetigated USB. The only other problem I see is HD space. Might need an external HDD. You need 7GB for every hour of HDTV you record. And you'd probably want a larger display fora cabin you could plug into the notebook. Or if you have at least a 120gb drive in the notebook and the screen is ok, then all you'd need is the usb tuner. That would give you about 15hrs. of HDTV space. Stations that broadcast at 720p only need about 4GB space per hour, but I think most broadcast the full 1080i. Only one here uses 720p. I can't tell the difference in the picture. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |

Where are the instructions? In this thread. In my sigline. All over the web. mythtv.org See. the mythtv docs at mythtv.com What if I want to watch one over the air channel in one room and another in another room? You can watch wherever you have a client machine and an available tuner anywhere. But that kind oif defeats the purpose of the recorder. I never watch live TV. Everything gets recorded that I watch. As an example, from the server log; 2006-06-15 13:00:03.039 Scheduled 243 items in 2.2 = 0.00 match + 2.23 place there's 243 recordings schealdule in the next 14 days. Can I watch satelite in one room and over the air channel in another? If you have a sat box. This is very interesting but I am slightly technically challeneged but learning every day! Let me make one thing clear. I only recommend MythTV for OTA digital (HDTV) reception. While it will record sat and cable, I don't know much about it as I've never had sat or cable and never will. So if you want to record sat or cable, I'd suggest a recorder from your sat or cable co. They usually provide them darn cheap as an incentive to use their service. And most should be adequate I would think. Recording sat or cable with a standalone box like MythTV, Tivo, whatever, requires some sort of interface to their box to control channel selction, etc. Usually with an IR blaster or possibly serial. If you plan on using one of these standalone type boxes with your sat or cable, investigate before starting. I can't help you much with it. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |

I see this is my answer to previous post Question tho.....could Myth work without ANY Internet service at all? Say I have a river camp. I setup a small Myth box there with off air antenna. But I have no Internet access there. Will it still work? |

I'm not looking to keep a "library" of shows. Just enough hard drive space to time shift is all I need Mater of fact.... it would be OK if I didn't get around to watching what is in the hard drive in say a certain number days.... that it just records right over it again. |
