Is it common for Freeview Set Top Boxes to 'crash' in a way which requires
them to be completely powered down before they will work again - or have I
got a duff one?

In the 3 weeks or so for which I have had an Alba STB2NS, it has crashed
about half a dozen times - not always in the same way. The variations
include:
* failure to respond to the remote control
* total loss of sound
* sound only when the menu is displayed, no sound when it isn't
* Jittery picture in which people seem to be violently waving their limbs
about

In each case, unplugging it from the mains and then plugging it in again has
fixed it.

I haven't yet attempted to record anything from it - but I would be worried
that if I tried to make an unattended recording, it might be having one of
its spasms at the time!

Any comments?

Both my lads have Alba STB-2s (not NS) and both have performed very well over
the last 9 months or so, They don't like to have a mobile phone too close though
! Apart from that neither have crashed yet.

Does not sound normal. You should take it back for an exchange.

I got one of those from Tesco for £13.90, thought it was a bargain but the
remote was useless and very plasticy and yes it did crash every time it was
left on over night requiring power off/on. It was okay if put into standby
though.

I took it back and paid another £20 odd for a bush one which I'm really
pleased with except the favourites don't work, but maybe this will be fixed
sometime if they release an update.

I bought Mum / Dad a FV STB when they first started to become popular
(mainly to remove nasty ghosting thanks to Canary Wharf).

I think the first one was a Daewoo and that lasted about a month. The
replacement lasted about the same time and the current box (a Labgear
Setpal jobby) locks up fairly regularly but they now know how to reset
it. ;-(

I bought a 'Digihome' or summat from Argos the other day and that
lasted 24 hours. Now trying a Panasonic ..

It's only since I've been looking about again for FV STB's I've
realised our main box (Thompson DTI-2300) is not bad .. It has a metal
case, front panel controls of power and channel, removable mains lead,
TopUpTV slot, twin SCART, RF Modulator (programmable), stereo phono
and digital audio out, and touching wood seems ok so far ?

Shame the onscreen displays are a bit weird and I've given up trying
to make use of 'Favourites' .. ?

All the best ..

You're making me think that you bought them from argos ! I bought a set top
box and other items that were sold as new but returned by other customers
and repackaged. The STB was faulty.
It depends on the make, but some can have a bit of a fit if you press the
buttons too fast or the remote batteries have worn out.
Due to mad weather conditions at the moment by digi box is cracking up like
mad when usualy it is OK. At various times of day it does this, but there
isn't much on apart from shopping and quiz channels or repeats of what was
on yesterday!

Not at all unusual for that model if you search out reviews. I returned
mine and got a cheapo Digilogic which hasn't crashed yet - although it
often comes up in black and white for a few minutes at switch-on.

The original Daewoo box and the Labgear Setpal are identical
electronics.

Why only on one day a year, and at that time of day? :)
