I've just picked up the latest Aldi offers leaflet - from next Thursday
they are doing a twin tuner 80GB PVR for £99.99. It is branded Tevion
(which seems to be their in-house brand) and the spec seems to tick all
the boxes. Anyone recognise it or have any thoughts?

TIA

Nick

If it's the same one they were knocking out before then it was initially
very buggy, but now seems mostly sorted.

I don't think it's a "proper" twin tuner PVR, in that you can't record
two programmes simultaneously. I'd still recommend the Thomson over this
for the same price, despite the smaller disk (which is easily
upgradeable).

[Disclaimer: It's not on their website yet, so I can't actually check
any of this]

Google 'aldi pvr', lots of indifference about this bargain. I'd go for
the Thompson DHD4000 from Argos for the same price, and upgrade the disc
(if really necessary).

I think with PVR's you generally get what you pay for. I wouldn't
expect much from a 100 pound unit.

Being a software programmer, I'm very cynical about new stuff and I wait
until the price comes down and the stability goes up. Perhaps the time to
buy is approaching!

It is the time to buy a Topfield.

I, on the other hand, got exactly what I expected and wanted - out of
the box, with no messing about with third party add-ons. Each to their
own.

Oh if only. A wife and 2 young children means that my time for personal
"for fun" programming is seriously curtailed. I need boxes to "plug and go"
these days :-(.

Speaking as someone with the technological competence of an earwig, I
would like to make the point that the Topfield does work straight out of
the box. The add-ons (TAPS) are excellent but they're definitely not
essential. It's the most accessible, least fussy piece of machinery
I've ever owned.

I do recognise it. Re-badged Technosonic PVR101. pvr101.blogspot.com

The Topfield is 'plug and go'. It's as simple and easy to use out-of-the-
box as any PVR. If you don't want to mess with the programming or the USB
port, don't. Even if you don't use those features it's still the best PVR
I've found.

Buy a refurbed Digifusion FVRT 100 from Morgan Computers instead. Unlike the
Aldi PVR, it can record two programmes at once and is a lot more reliable.
