I don't know what it's called but I want to do it anyway

I've had a Humax 8000 for a couple of years now and have been very
happy with it. Now I'm looking at buying a twin-tuner PVR. But there's
one thing I'd like any new machine to do and it's this:

I'm watching something through the PVR as it's being broadcast. Trouble
is, I've got to go out in a minute but I want to see the end of the
show. I know I can just hit pause and then I can resume watching when I
come back, but is there a way to save the recording (it's there on the
disk somewhere after all) so it's stored just like ordinary scheduled
recordings?

I can't find any way to do this on my Humax, but can any other (esp
twin tuner) devices do this?

And does it have a name?

Thanks

Not AFAIK.

Save buffer to disk?

It seems to me that the PVR makers have an interest in keeping the
buffer as fleeting as possible, deleting it at every opportunity, such
as when changing channels, recording or playing back.

The manufacturers often don't know what features will be popular, and
there is some merit in making them aware of these.

Humax has now introduced chase-play and auto-padding on to the 9200t,
after demand from users.

Thanks

The Thomson DHD4000 can do this. When you tell it to record the
programme you are already watching, it will record from the start of the
programme, provided that it is still in the trick buffer. You just need
to make sure the buffer is large enough to handle any likely case (the
size is user definable, up to a maximum of 120 minutes).

I can't speak for any other machines, but I'm sure their advocates will
be along shortly...

The record button ... ?

Can any PVR NOT do what you are asking?

...or do you mean when you press record it starts from that moment,
not reaching backwards into the buffer and recording the start of the
program as well (like tivo does)?

Reallocating the buffer when switching channels (where that action also
requires a tuner to be reallocated) seems eminently sensible to me. Two
tuners, two buffers. How would you have it work?

Certainly on the 9200, I can just press Record and it'll record from the
current point of view until the end of the programme. If it is already
time shifted, then it'll save from the point you're watching until the
end of the programme (or maybe the end of the buffer).

If you want to dump the whole buffer, then I just rewind at 64x to the
beginning of the buffer, and then just hit Record.

I'd say TiVo probably have a patent on saving the buffer as part of a
new recording....

The Topfield TF5800 does (along with loads of other things it does
better than the Humax), you press record and it records two hours, or
press again and you have the option to record until the end of this
program or the next program.

If they do, it must be one of those software patents granted in the US
for stating the bleeding obvious...

Anyway, the ability to do this certainly isn't unique to TiVo.

You can also go via the menu on the Topfield, choose Recording, ,and
then Current Event, and all the parts of the current programme that are
in the buffer will be included.

A couple of TAPs will do this automatically for you, or you can just
rewind, press record, and do it that way.

Nigel.
