FilmFour free on Sky?

Has anyone confirmed whether FimFour will be free (FTA or FTV) on Sky when
it launches on Freeview in July?

Don't want a repeat of the E4/More 4 situation...

That site doesn't make it clear whether it will be FTA or FTV even though
they use the term 'free to air' I suspect it will be free to view as,
Channel 4, currently is.

We had a fiasco with E4 in 2001 and now new-improved-DOG-free MORE4 being
"free to air" to Sky subscribers only.

I will believe it when I see it!

I shall be personally writing a letter of thanks to Andy Duncan if FilmFour
appears DOG-free and free-to-air.

We will see if Sky ****s them over.

I suspect it will be ftv. Freesat meaning FTV, ie card required, sky
box only.

Thats us buggered in Ireland then.

When will FilmFour go free-to-air?
July 2006.

Why is FilmFour going free-to-air?
It is Channel 4's ambition to widen its digital offering, so that a greater
range of programming is available within digital homes.

Well, I wouldn't count my chickens just yet.
Thinking more about it, the statement is still a bit ambiguous.

If it was truely, fully FTA, then why make an explicit comment about "Sky
digital subscribers" - as in it will be available to *subscribers*?
Does that mean if you have a Sky box you must be a subscriber to a sky
package to pick up Film4?
But people with other non-sky satellite receivers can pick it up FTA?

who knows. C4 did make similar statements about More 4 that turned out not
to be FTA on sky

How would that work then? For it to be available on non-Sky boxes it would
have to be fully FTA (not encrypted), which means a Sky box would be able to
receive it without a viewing card.

That sentence that you focused on could be interpreted in that way, yes.

But other parts of the paragraph make it ambiguous

"The channel will launch on Freeview for the first time and will continue to
be available to all cable and satellite viewers at no additional cost. On
digital satellite, the FilmFour Channel will be available to freesat viewers
as well as Sky digital subscribers."

e.g. "available to all cable and satellite viewers at no additional cost"
all? whether you subscribe to Sky or not?
no additional cost? well if you are already a subscriber, no additional cost
would be a true statement.

However, at least FTV means that it should not be part of a sky subscription
package, (though still require a Sky viewing card)

So as usual C4 find it difficult to be precise about what they actually mean
and the people who write such statements there would seem to still not fully
understand the difference between FTA and FTV, or between Freesat, Sky, and
Freesatfromsky.

I agree, that's why I was asking the question about being explicit in their
statements about Sky *subscribers*.
Why make such a statement if it is FTA, unless of course it is just trying
to be inclusive, as in Sky subscibers will also get it by virtue of the fact
they they get all FTA channels anyway.

It's not difficult to bolt on one dish and run a length of cable,
while the nearby Sky installations look pretty shoddy and the
in-laws Sky box seemed to be forever failing.

No way is that install + C4/five worth an 80 quid premium.

I checked the current bank rate 1.4644
Use a decent credit card eg. Liverpool Victoria to buy the goods and
that is close to what you will get. Use a Bad one like 99% of the

Ofcom knew enough to exclude FTA sets from the official statistics.

The number of subscription viewers is known, as each and every one
must pay to do so. The number of FTV viewers is known, as each and
every one must obtain a card to do so. The number of FTA viewers is
unknown, and is not so much "excluded" as "hard to count accurately".

Why the $DEITY is Ofcom allowed to compile them instead of ONS?

Because responsibility for broadcasting lies with Ofcom, whereas ONS
have responsibility for economy, population and society only.

Clearly many FTV viewers will in fact be using ex-subscription cards.
This makes them just as hard to count as the FTA viewers.

The figures are meaningless, as is Ofcom.

Ofcom have to have *something* to do.

At the current Interbank rate as stated by www.oanda.com 37 Euros is 25.26656. I
get paid in Euros so was providing a direct comparison to the real cost of a FTA
satellite receiver in Rip-off Britain.

No, they are *excluded*. There's not even an attempt to count them:

I remarked on 2004-11-03:

"homes with a digital satellite set-top box but without a current
Sky subscription can receive BBC channels but not ITV1, Channel 4 and
Five. Ofcom no longer considers such homes to be digital households."
- from Driving Digital Switchover, Ofcom

With that one piece of handwaving, Ofcom erased the million homes with
non-Sky satellite systems from the statistics at the end of 2003.

Looking further, this Digital Television Update says: "The only additional
free-to-view satellite households in future will be those who churn-off
Sky's subscription service." To be counted as a non-Sky satellite
user, one must first subscribe to Sky. When Sky change viewing cards,
the counter will be reset to zero unless there is a new scheme to sell
viewing cards. Free-to-air viewers simply don't count.

They do exist, though. Sky is not the only choice for satellite TV.

Why the $DEITY is Ofcom allowed to compile them instead of ONS?

Because responsibility for broadcasting lies with Ofcom, whereas ONS
have responsibility for economy, population and society only.

It's as much a social statistic as Internet use, which ONS compiles.

Hope that explains,

I used http://www.xe.com/ucc/ which seems pretty close, obviously you can
never be precise when exchange rates change by the second.
