TiVo desktop, TTGo transfers and LOUD hum

I've been using (very successfully) a Series2 box, a Linksys wireless-G
router, and TiVo-approved wireless-G adapter for some time now. ALong with
TiVo Desktop, I can successfully transfer programs to my desktop machine
(hard cabled to the router) and my old, now non-functional Toshiba laptop
(connected to route by both cable and wireless).

Now I have a brand-spanking new HP laptop. I transferred a bunch of movies
from TiVo to the laptop to watch on a trip - using a cable connection to the
router - and the shows were all unwatchable. A loud electronic HUMMMM was on
every sound track, especially in the left earpiece of my headphones. Not of
my jiggering around with audio settings made a bit of difference. TTGo
transfers to the desktop still work just fine.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any hints regarding diagnosing something I
may have missed?
