More4+1 gone?

According to all my Freeview boxen (signals from Crystal Palace) More4+1
is now defunct, and will be replaced by Film4 on 31 July. OK, fair
enough, but why kill the channel now, so early? It's handy (well it was)
if you missed an NYPD Blue episode on More4. My guess is that they need
the bandwidth for all of this Big Brother **** - I seem to have a
channel 305 in my line-up now.

Thanks, Channel 4, way to go. Not.

using the space for a +1 channel was just temporary, it was useful for
you while it was there, but presumably you'll appreciate a proper
channel rather than jut a timeshifted one?

yes, but you really you could just get a 2nd tuner

Probably, but all the 60p phone calls from the BB mugs will help fund
More4/Film4 :-)

True, but why maintain E4+1? They could have just as easily junked that
in favour of Film4.

Can't quite see how that would help.

I'm not so sure. C4 has held the rights to NYPD Blue, and it was bl**dy
annoying when they stopped showing anything after series 9 some years
ago. Given the high number of repeats on E4/More4 I can't quite see
where the money is going now, let alone if BB mugs pay-up.

I still think that it was somewhat scabby to kill the +1 channel just t
make way for BB. Gold ol' C4 is ramming this rubbish down our collective
throats once again this year. Seems like if you don't like sport
(Wimbledon/World Cup et al) and you don't lkie BB then tough. Sigh.

Sorry, I went off at a tangent I suppose, +1 channels and/or dual tuners
help me resolve scheduling conflicts, but only +1 channels help if you
didn't know it was on until half way through the programme ...

I can see an uplift in DVD sales and rentals!

But then with all the programmes / series in the various TV channels
'back-catalouges' there is really no excuse for having +1 channels,
other than for people who can't workout how to set up their video

Here up North the caption simply says "From July" and "channel 31" for
FilmFour, but states no specific date in July.

E4+1 is going to be 'junked' as well in due course, as C4 are going to
replace it with 'C4 America'.

The +1 channels are a waste of bandwidth - if viewers want timeshifted
programmes they should buy a Digital PVR, which are now widely available and
the successor to VCR's.

On the other hand, they fill bandwidth, are very cheap to produce requiring
no significant expense, they strategically increase the channel's exposure
to viewers, and they block out new-up-start broadcasters and competitors
from entering the market.

Of course as a Topfield owner, I agree that a PVR makes these services less
important.

Were VCR's not *personal* then, how have I managed to keep mine for
my sole use for so long without demands for me to share it about?!

'PVR' is a commercial marketing term and not a generic product term,
that would be either a DVR or DVB Recorder.

It confuses what C4 does well, and is slightly incompatible with E4, MORE4,

For proper Channel 4 to concentrate on UK content, they would be following
the path of BBC DUMB, BBC TWO, and SH-ITV. That is not exactly a winning
strategy given the superiority of US television and decline of channels
showing indigenous content.

In the end, words mean what we want them to mean. Dictionaries are

Agreed. The More4 signal from Midhurst is very poor, with almost constant

Well there was the advert showing the guy sitting in an
armchair watching telly with a "WOW" expression. That implied
that somehow the picture was better, and completely missed

telling
the audience what a PVR did for you.

Never saw that advert. Perhaps he was saying 'Wow it's recorded my
favourite show! I never knew it was on!':)

His favourite show and he didn't know it was on! As I said, a
halfwit...

I sometimes forget that a new season of a particular programme has
started. I don't have time to look at the viewing papers or watch
trailers. So that makes me a half-wit? :)

Or he might be saying:

'Wow! It's recorded a programme about my favourite subject!'

The Tivo can record programmes based on your viewing habits and your
wishlists. That's why I like to call it a PVR.

I believe, halfwit, in the post you replied to, was the signature.
