And even if it were really possible for a gadget of any kind to relieve me
of the task of thinking for myself, I wouldn't want it. I *like* to think,
I *like* to look and choose and form opinions of my own and decide things
for myself. Thinking is what reminds me I'm alive.

I appreciate your preferences and reasons for wanting to use a PVR other than
a TiVo, but even though I like to let it think for me in terms of suggestions
(and it's done very well for me on a number of occasions - there's always a
Sin Cities episode picked up from Bravo or FTN if I want to watch it :), it
doesn't mean I have to forego my brain entirely :)

You make my point perfectly!...

Put the world into reverse. It might match your backwards way of

thinking.

At least my brain won't stagnate!

Nah, it doesn't stagnate, I just retain it for the times when it really
matters. :)

Like checking to see what your TiVio / Sky+ might have recorded
rather than knowing what it has recorded....

Doing the same old thing, the same way is what causes your brain to
stagnate.
You need to do things in different ways to keep making new pathways to stop
it stagnating.

For example, look at how many old people have difficulty driving.
They have been doing the same thing for years and it doesn't help.

Doing the same old thing, the same way is what causes your brain to
stagnate.

Quite correct, and that is what using a Tivio type unit does, all you
do is watch the screen and rather than having to work out what you
really want to watch, are there any timing clashes etc. etc. etc. You
make my point perfectly!....

So, you will stop using your TiVio then, seeing that "Doing the same
old thing, the same way is what causes your brain to stagnate", using
TV listings, planning multiple recordings (so there are no clashes)
and actually having to program the video recorder is far more likely
to give ones brain something to do rather than just working out how
to press the play back button on a TiVio!

For example, look at how many old people have difficulty driving.
They have been doing the same thing for years and it doesn't help.

Oh right, so you would suggest that they take up formation flying, do
something new and all will be well again?

You really are proving my point, your brain cell has stagnated, the
reason elderly people *sometimes* have difficulty driving (or what
ever) is because their brain is literally dying due to old age, OTOH
there are many young people with brains that just don't think even
though they are in the prime of their lives...

You don't need to convince me that the Tivo is a very clever device, but
for my needs it seems much more clever than it needs to be, as it doesn't
do anything that I'm not already perfectly capable of doing myself with
hardly any inconvenience at all. If I need it, think my present disk
recorders can be set to record the same thing week after week indefinitely,
but I don't really see the point of programming years in advance because
even the broadcasters themselves don't plan everything that far ahead.

I would have agreed with you, and I still prefer my Pace Twin over a
Tivo because there's no way the picture quality can be any worse than
what's broadcast.

BUT I noticed the other day that BBC Four are repeating the Take One
Museum series. Unfortunately, I noticed it _after_ they'd repeated the
one about the Bradford Film and Television museum. This was the one I
heard about on here last time, and most wanted to see!

I assume that Tivo would have spotted that I'd recorded the others from
the last showing, and grabbed the ones I'd previously missed from the
current repeat showings.

I think that would be great.

If I could teach my Pace Twin that I love "I'm Sorry I haven't a clue"
and "The News Quiz", but hate "The Now show" and "quote unquote" that
would save a little bit of faffing. A Tivo would learn this very
quickly, not that tivo is the ideal way to record radio!

Cheers,
David.

Most people use less than 10% of their brain so a lot can die before it is
missed.
You need to retrain the rest.
Doing varied things helps.
Going through the same thing setting up manual recordings is unlikely to
help.
Use the EPG and do something else with the time saved.

Yeh, like watch the programmes that the TiVio think you ant to watch!

In one breath you say that the brain should be made to do things
(like working out the programming of, and the set up of, the video
recorder to prevent clashes) and in the next you say that one should
be using a machine that makes all that needless, you can't have it
both ways - unless you're brain dead from allowing your brain to
stagnate whilst watching to many programmes recorded on a TiVio!

TiVo is perfect for recording radio for me. I record from the Sky digibox in
'basic' quality (the sound is unaffected and the picture is unimportant).

Season passes for each used to do the trick until Sky made the radio channels
4 digits long, but there's a workaround for that so I can still get exactly
what I had before the change.

I hate Quote Unquote, but love the others.

And there's also The Day The Music Died (returning Saturday), Heresy, All The
Way From Memphis and, next Friday sees the return of Armando Iannucci's Charm
Offensive.
