So that makes me a half-wit? :)

Unfortunately, IMO, yes. :~(

Well there was the advert showing the guy sitting in an
armchair watching telly with a "WOW" expression. That implied
that somehow the picture was better, and completely missed telling
the audience what a PVR did for you.

Never saw that advert. Perhaps he was saying 'Wow it's recorded my
favourite show! I never knew it was on!':)

His favourite show and he didn't know it was on! As I said, a

I sometimes forget that a new season of a particular programme has
started. I don't have time to look at the viewing papers or watch
trailers. So that makes me a half-wit? :)

Or he might be saying:

'Wow! It's recorded a programme about my favourite subject!'

The Tivo can record programmes based on your viewing habits and your
wishlists. That's why I like to call it a PVR.

I believe, halfwit, in the post you replied to, was the signature.

Jerry is clearly both a halfwit and a troll. Given his hatred of TiVo, he's
probably Rupert Murdoch in disguise.

Q: What do you call a hard-disk recorder that crashes before you have the
chance to watch all your programmes and stops you watching them because you've
unsubscribed from a channel in the meantime?
A: Sky+

Not at all, just someone who can read a listings magazine and can
work out how to set up a video recorder (of what ever format), the

What do you call a HDD recorder that records a knitting competition
instead of a programme about fast cars, just because the programme
derails highlighted the WI group who knitted a blanket with pictures
of fast cars on it?
A: A Tivio!...

All of this sounds so unhelpful I'm glad I haven't got any of it. One
of my DTTV receivers has something called "Videoplus", but I've never
used that either, and frankly I'm surprised anyone thinks any of these
gimmicks is worth having. You'd think that anyone intelligent enough to
understand a television programme would also be intelligent enough to
understand a programme listing (such as Radio Times or Digiguide
according to preference) and would know how to tell the time.

Many people say things like that..
Until they get a PVR.
Even my 85 year old dad uses a Sky+ now.

What a bloody stupid thing to say, how many VCR's are there in the
world, people have been using personal video recorders since the
early 1970's. Although I will concede that the price has dropped some
what, they now record in colour (and for more than an hour or so) and
have not only a multi-event timer but a digital clock [1]!

Even my 85 year old dad uses a Sky+ now.

Good for him! But can he set a the timer?...

[1] Jerry, who first used a 'Philips "VCR" Format Model N1500'
Personal Video Recorder back in about 1974, if you don't know what it
is then try the following URL!

Why should he want (or need) to set a "timer"?

That's truly fascinating, and I'm sure you could hold an audience
captivated with tales of your pioneering struggles with the early
machines, much as Antoine de Saint-Exupery did for aeroplanes in "Wind,
Sand and Stars"...

But just as I now expect, when boarding an aircraft, to arrive at my
intended destination at the appointed time, rather than being "forced
down" into a far-flung field by the weather, so I have higher
expectations of my recording technology. I've moved on. It's rather sad
that you cannot.

Clearly you're speaking as someone who's never used a TiVo.

The problem lay with the marketing, as well as from not training the likes of
the Neanderthal Men working at Currys on how to sell it.

If I'd been in charge I'd have given full refunds to those who bought TiVos
PROVIDING they'd had it in their house for at least four weeks before
returning it (set an upper limit on this at about 6 weeks). That's because it
takes a couple of weeks to learn the kind of programmes you like and so it can
make adequate suggestions via the meta data.

They'd have had very few returning it, because it's not a product you can
easily describe to the consumer. You have to test it out for a few weeks to
fully understand what it's capable of.

I correct what I said earlier: Clearly you're speaking as someone who's never
used a TiVo, let alone even bother to read up on what it can do.

Here's some homework for you:

Actually, my TiVo is. Shortly after getting mine, and before I set up a season
pass for a programme there was one thing I watched regularly and I forgot to
set it up one night as I lay in bed in the late afternoon not feeling too
well.

When I awoke a few hours later, it had recorded it as a suggestion.

If I was to come up with a marketing slogan for me as a 34-year-old bloke who
watches far too much TV than is good for him and so wants to set season passes
and have any clashes worked around automatically so it still gets everything,
I'd say: "TiVo - it saves me having to think!"
