More4+1 gone?

According to all my Freeview boxen (signals from Crystal Palace) More4+1
is now defunct, and will be replaced by Film4 on 31 July. OK, fair
enough, but why kill the channel now, so early? It's handy (well it was)
if you missed an NYPD Blue episode on More4. My guess is that they need
the bandwidth for all of this Big Brother **** - I seem to have a
channel 305 in my line-up now.

Thanks, Channel 4, way to go. Not.

The really irritating part of this for me is that More4+1 was higher
resolution and on a less busy multiplex than More4 so it was my choice
for watching any More4 content. So channel4 dedicate the highest
technical quality to the lowest content quality.

But they're going to put FilmFour on the technically higher quality channel.

Low quality for 13 weeks, or are you attempting to describe Film4 as
low quality - well I suppose if you hate films it is!...

I was referring to 13 weeks of BB and not getting high quality More4.
I'm looking forward to Film4

I know I might be in a minority but it wouldn't bother me if BB was put
out at 1pixel x 1 pixel resolution, preferably with the sound muted.

4 Ulster?), V4 (Virtual Horse Racing?), W4 (local TV for West London?), X4
(Channel 4's Pay per View adult channel), Y4, Z4 (Wildlife channel about
Zebras in Zoos). Any more suggestions?

What4?

The +1 channels are a waste of bandwidth - if viewers want timeshifted
programmes they should buy a Digital PVR, which are now widely available and
the successor to VCR's.

Most programmes seem to be repeated endlessly, anyway.

Agreed. The More4 signal from Midhurst is very poor, with almost constant
blocking and freezing. More4+1, on a different mux, was almost
blocking-free.

'PVR' is a commercial marketing term and not a generic product

term,
that would be either a DVR or DVB Recorder.

In the end, words mean what we want them to mean. Dictionaries are
descriptive rather than normative. I will therefore continue to use
'PVR', because I know exactly what I have in mind. I may have the
occasional fight with a Tivo owner over the exact feature set

required
to justify that term, but neither of us are likely to defer to you!

Then you will carry on looking like a halfwit who believes all the
marketing hype, like many a TiVio owner in fact!

As a very happy owner of 2 TiVos What marketing hype?

Well there was the advert showing the guy sitting in an
armchair watching telly with a "WOW" expression. That implied
that somehow the picture was better, and completely missed telling
the audience what a PVR did for you.

Pete.

Never saw that advert. Perhaps he was saying 'Wow it's recorded my
favourite show! I never knew it was on!':)

I sometimes forget that a new season of a particular programme has
started. I don't have time to look at the viewing papers or watch
trailers. So that makes me a half-wit? :)

Or he might be saying:

'Wow! It's recorded a programme about my favourite subject!'

The Tivo can record programmes based on your viewing habits and your
wishlists. That's why I like to call it a PVR.

I believe, halfwit, in the post you replied to, was the signature.
