Given some of the shocking journalism I've seen elsewhere, that wasn't
too bad.

Mind you...

"Most televisions purchased in recent years have included a built-in
digital (Freeview) tuner."

?!

Cheers,
David.

Couldn't resist replying though...

Dear Sir,

"...the Confederation of Aerial Industries (www.cai.org.uk) is
banking on a windfall once the need for aerial upgrades becomes evident
to viewers in problem areas."

I feel sure the CAI members are salivating over the prospect, but there
is one fact which they are desperate to keep secret: When the analogue
TV signals are switched off, the digital TV signals (currently
broadcast at low power, and often at the wrong frequencies for existing
aerials to pick up) will be moved into the right range of frequencies
for existing aerials, and have their power boosted dramatically.

Anyone who receives an interference-free analogue picture now should be
able to receive all the existing stations and many more via digital
after switch over, without any change to their aerial. What's more,
in each region, BBC Two is going to be switched from analogue to
digital a few weeks or months before the other channels. This will give
people time to see if digital works, before analogue is switched off.

Some people will be unlucky, with damaged or old aerials or cabling
proving inadequate. Also, a very small number of transmitters will keep
some of the extra commercial stations outside the frequency range of
existing aerials. So if you want digital now, or if you want to be sure
of receiving all possible channels in the future, an aerial upgrade
might be necessary.

However, anyone who doesn't want to rush into spending "an extra
£300 per household" for an oversized aerial might be advised to wait
and see if their STB magically starts working when the digital signals
are boosted.

Regards,
Dr David Robinson.
P.S. The usability of a digital PVR is a dream. However, digital
picture quality isn't always better than good analogue reception.
Quite the opposite on detailed, fast moving pictures.

And there was the other bit ........

"Will I still be able to use my old video recorder?

Yes. Before DSO, a VCR will play tapes and record digital television,
if supplied with a digital signal. After switch-off, it will play back
tapes, but you'll need a second digital tuner to record one programme
while you watch another. "

To anyone with the usual British level of technical understanding this
implies (at least at the start) that a current VCR will work with a
digital signal - by implication off-air. Also by implication, a VCR
and can record and playback at the same time!

Oh, sorry, I forgot, this was in the Sunday Times. Plebs don't read
that.................do they?

I suppose you're right. People on here wouldn't class me as a pleb because
they don't have to live with me. But you ask my old woman. She'll give you
chapter and verse on my plebbyness. She puts my perfectly good jumpers in
the bin, and I have to keep getting them out again.

Mind you I did a very rash thing the other day. I threw out a pair of
underpants. You'd think I was made of money wouldn't you?
