Oh! I am surprised. Ta for the info. I still disagree that it would
discourage people from going to matches - there's a world of
difference between being there and merely watching it on TV.

There is also a world of difference between going to see, say Barnet v
Stockport on a wet and cold saturday in January, or watching , say, Arsenal
v Man Utd in the comfort of your friendly local pub or your house. Thats
what they are worried about, not people choosing to watch the Arsenal game
on tv instead of going to it. Even if only 500-1,000 people at the Barnet
game decided to watch the premiership game instead, that would probably make
the difference over a season between breaking even and going under for those
kind of clubs.

Its also very likely that the deal that the FA have with the greek company
specifically excludes that co from showing it outside of greece,and
certainly not in the UK, so I would expect them to be either shutting that
contract down or not renewing it iof there is a loophole that lets them
show it. SKy would have paid extra money to the FA for exclusivity.

Didn't the EU want to break that exclusive deal though and force the FA into
allowing more competition?
If EU laws were a level playing field that competition could come from
anywhere in the EU, not just the UK.

So the Greeks might then turn to the EU

Sounds daft to me. The FA can get their money from Sky wherever the
matches are shown.

Last time I wanted to go to a football match, the response was "sorry,
season ticket holders only - and then if we have any tickets left
they'll be sold to fan club members before the general public." "Are
you likely to have any left after the season ticket holders and fan
club members have bought their tickets?" "No."

That may be the case with some Premiership clubs (I would suspect no more
than half) but not in the lower leagues.

Got to agree, quite a few of the recent premiership games I've seen on the
TV have had a lot of empty seats, obviously well into the thousands. Wigan
appear only ever to be about 2/3 full. Once you get below the top 5 or 6,
plus Newcastle and Pompey, they will all have plenty of vacancies.

When I was going to Reading earlier this season (before it looked like they
were going to be promoted) and previous seasons, they were getting 11-12,000
for midweek games, which is about 50%, and well under 20,000 for saturday
matches.

OTOH the only Chelsea game I could get to this season was an early stage
Euro one.

A shame really the proper idiots that run A-1 sold it to Sky....no wonder
it's not catching on with only the footie hooligan subscribing to Sky Sports
( I've heard all Sky Sports subscribers go automatically onto a police
database where a relative of mine works )

Wouldn't bother me in the case of motor racing. If I want to see cars
going round & round in a big circles, I can just watch the local
joyriders on Saturday night. :)
