No doubt the will announce it is H5N1 (not just H5) next week,
afterall supermarket and farmers profits are more important than
public health.

What %age of dead birds are actually tested for H5N1?
My guess is about 1 in 10,000 or less, the country is and probably
has been riddled with the disease for weeks if not months.

All the big interests are against finding this disease.

It's just as wrong there as here. What chances do you think you have of
catching bird flu if you don't live with birds in your house and slaughter
them on the kitchen table with no regard to normal standards of hygiene?

Hint: No chance or as near makes no difference.

And you cannot have vaccine for the human version until the human version of
the flu actually exists.

There does seem to be a missing sense of proportion regarding bird flu.
Salmonella is much more infectious but apart from the Edwina Currie fuss in
the 80s the tabloids don't get so wound up about it. Interesting that
necrotising fasciitis (the "flesh eating killer bug") has been absent from
the tabloids over the last few years and MRSA seems to be dropping out of
the reports as well. What are the chances that bird flu will be forgotten
when another scary bug gets into the press?

Probably not - I think there'll be a dual strand approach; outwardly
lots of spin to demonstrate that they are in control (yeah, right!) but
in reality, they'll be taking no practical measures. After all, the
less money the Treasury spends on prevention means there's more to go

Like all the scientists involved I am very scared of the potentialities of
bird flu mutated to a human form. Irrelevant scare stories don't help you

However it is not an irrelevant "scare story", there is a very real
and grave danger which is not helped by the foolish behaviour
of the government which puts profits before lives.

Their main message, that it is safe to eat cooked chicken and
eggs is folly. The bird you are preparing, or the egg you
are cracking may already be infected with bird flu so you
are handling the flesh and fluids of an infected bird.
But that is a risk you *must* take otherwise the directors
of your local supermarket might miss their annuall bonus.

Ask yourself one question, have you seen Blair, a member
of the RSPB, a member of the farmers union, or a
supermarket barron *handling* a raw egg or raw chicken
yet?

I haven't which is a surprise.

This bird was found a *week* ago.

What is the real danger that you perceive?

Evidence?

The bird you are preparing, or the egg you are cracking may already be
infected with bird flu so you are handling the flesh and fluids of an
infected bird. But that is a risk you *must* take otherwise the directors
of your local supermarket might miss their annuall bonus.

No problem. If that's your fear then turn vegan now. Now tell me of one person
that has been made ill of bird flu through eating eggs or flesh - or through
handling the animals in a way normal and expected in this country.

Ask yourself one question, have you seen Blair, a member of the RSPB, a
member of the farmers union, or a supermarket barron *handling* a raw egg
or raw chicken yet?

Yes.

I haven't which is a surprise.

!!

This bird was found a *week* ago.

I think there are details of this that is yet to be clarified - but it doesn't
make your silly scare story any more relevant.

NB Do be afraid of the way birds are handled in places like Turkey, SE Asia, -
or worst South China. That's where there is the likeliest chance of a mutation
that will cross to humans and that - probably after the Chinese New Year
holiday - is where it will escape into the world.

Then implement your plans to cut yourself off from the rest of the world for 3
- 24 months. :-((

Who are these People Responsible? An elite gang who broke into systems
all over the world, and hacked code to make it fail, or are you
suggesting some sort of global conspiracy amongst programmers? And the
people who made money were largely unnecessary consultants(1), who
would otherwise just have been making money getting in the way of some
other project.

*I can't imagine them being so stupid as to do it by accident.

Do what by accident? Go from 1999 to 2000? Please elaborate.

Most people had realised that 1999 was followed by 2000 and had known and
appreciated that for some time. Computer systems designers had taken it into
account in plenty of time. Some had not expected their systems to be running
by the turn of the century and can be forgiven for problems with their systems
of 30+ years earlier.
Microsoft didn't have that excuse but were the main beneficiaries when even
their very recent systems needed to be upgraded.

(1) Some may say that the word unnecessary is itself unnecessary here,
but I've actually met maybe four consultants who were actually worth
their salary in the last 23 years.
