Probably not - I think there'll be a dual strand approach; outwardly
lots of spin to demonstrate that they are in control (yeah, right!) but
in reality, they'll be taking no practical measures. After all, the
less money the Treasury spends on prevention means there's more to go
round on pensions for the survivors! :)

It's just as wrong there as here. What chances do you think you have of
catching bird flu if you don't live with birds in your house and slaughter
them on the kitchen table with no regard to normal standards of hygiene?

Hint: No chance or as near makes no difference.

And you cannot have vaccine for the human version until the human version of
the flu actually exists.

Not to mention, the DEFRA chief coming on TV next week, to apologise for
the mistaken mass killing of everyone in the Sudbury Birds Custard
factory.

Don't make 'light' of it, if the disease mutates it might turn out to be our
swansong!

Like all the scientists involved I am very scared of the potentialities of
bird flu mutated to a human form. Irrelevant scare stories don't help you
prepare for the real thing.

However it is not an irrelevant "scare story", there is a very real
and grave danger which is not helped by the foolish behaviour
of the government which puts profits before lives.

Their main message, that it is safe to eat cooked chicken and
eggs is folly. The bird you are preparing, or the egg you
are cracking may already be infected with bird flu so you
are handling the flesh and fluids of an infected bird.
But that is a risk you *must* take otherwise the directors
of your local supermarket might miss their annuall bonus.

Ask yourself one question, have you seen Blair, a member
of the RSPB, a member of the farmers union, or a
supermarket barron *handling* a raw egg or raw chicken
yet?

I haven't which is a surprise.

This bird was found a *week* ago.

Evidence?

infected with bird flu so you are handling the flesh and fluids of an
infected bird. But that is a risk you *must* take otherwise the directors
of your local supermarket might miss their annuall bonus.

No problem. If that's your fear then turn vegan now. Now tell me of one person
that has been made ill of bird flu through eating eggs or flesh - or through
handling the animals in a way normal and expected in this country.

Ask yourself one question, have you seen Blair, a member of the RSPB, a
member of the farmers union, or a supermarket barron *handling* a raw egg
or raw chicken yet?

Yes.

I think there are details of this that is yet to be clarified - but it doesn't
make your silly scare story any more relevant.

NB Do be afraid of the way birds are handled in places like Turkey, SE Asia, -
or worst South China. That's where there is the likeliest chance of a mutation
that will cross to humans and that - probably after the Chinese New Year
holiday - is where it will escape into the world.

Then implement your plans to cut yourself off from the rest of the world for 3
- 24 months. :-((

You'll have to take my word that I saw a member of the RSPB make an omelette
