Just heard on TV 101 is being trialed for 999 calls.
Anyone now why this number?
Thought Europe use 112.
If so why not all EU use the same?

Hi David, it's not a replacement, mate, it's a side by side service.
This is supposed to be for 'minor' incidents, such as nuisance and
vandalism and will actually be charged at a rate of 10p a call. If
your call is thought to be an emergency it will be transferred.

101 is going to be a non-emergency equivalent to 999, to save you having
to look up the number of your local police station if you want to report
something that isn't serious enough to dial 999.

No it's not. 101 is for non-emergency calls to the police and is charged.

so they can reduce the 70% of time wasting 999 calls.

112 is the Internationally recognised emergency number. Non charged.

101 is for non-emergencies, it costs 10p per minute. 999 and 112 will
continue to be used for emergencies.
