OT 101 might be the new 999 number.

Just heard on TV 101 is being trialed for 999 calls.
Anyone now why this number?
Thought Europe use 112.
If so why not all EU use the same?

Hi David, it's not a replacement, mate, it's a side by side service.
This is supposed to be for 'minor' incidents, such as nuisance and
vandalism and will actually be charged at a rate of 10p a call. If
your call is thought to be an emergency it will be transferred.

101 is going to be a non-emergency equivalent to 999, to save you having
to look up the number of your local police station if you want to report
something that isn't serious enough to dial 999.

No it's not. 101 is for non-emergency calls to the police and is charged.

You obviously didn't listen very well. It is for non-emergency calls,
so they can reduce the 70% of time wasting 999 calls.

We already use 112.

Thought that was on mobiles, and one gets charged.

But just looked in my BT Book and it says use 999 or 112 from a line or
mobile, no mention if free or charged.

No it's not. 101 is for non-emergency calls to the police and is charged.

Thanks to all for that prompt info.
Will try to avoid it, anyway can't think off hand why I would have a non
emergency call.

112 is the Internationally recognised emergency number. Non charged.

101 is for non-emergencies, it costs 10p per minute. 999 and 112 will
continue to be used for emergencies.

Clearly you are blessed by a lack of imagination!
