Closed Captioning and VCR Recording with High Definition TVs

Hi,

I recently purchased a 42-inch High Definition TV that I use right now.
I'm loving it. However, I'm having two small problems. On normal
channels, the Closed Captioning appears to work fine, but on High
Definition channels, it does not work at all. Is there some special
setting I need to adjust for Closed Captioning to work on the Higher
Definition channels? Also, there's a slight problem with my VCR. I
can watch movies on my DVD Player and VCR just fine, but there's a
slight problem with the VCR recording. To be able to use the VCR, I
need to go into the menu to switch from Cable to VCR - which sets it on
a different channel. However, if I want to record something that's on
Cable, I can't really do anything since it's on a dedicated VCR
channel. Is there some way I can fix this as well?

Thanks in advance!

Dont' know about your TV. Mine is a 42" Sony. Yes there is a separate
setting for HDTV captioning, if your locals are broadcasting the Closed
Captioning.

I receive Closed Captioning on HD channels from Tampa and Orlando, but NBC
from Ft. Myers does not provide the Closed Captioning even tho they say they
are.

How are you getting the HD and digital channels? For digital channels,
the captions are generated by the tuner/decoder. If you have an external
cable or satellite set top box, turn on the captions in the set top box,
not in the TV. If you are using an internal ATSC or QAM tuner in the TV,
there may be a separate CC setting switch for the digital tuner. Also,
with digital captions, you can change the font, size, color to make the
captions much less obtrusive than they used to be.

Can't help much with the VCR settings. Not clear on how you have it
hooked up. However, if you are using the VCR to time shift programs and
you have cable, I would strongly recommend you look into getting a HD
DVR from the cable company. Probably will run another $5 to $10 a month
depending on how the cable company prices it compared to a HD non-DVR
STB, but a digital video recorder changes how you watch TV.

Sounds like you have a HD digital cable box, but I'm not sure because you
don't really say. If so, check the box setup settings to see if it supports
CC on the HD stations. It could be the HD stations you get don't support it
or the box doesn't support it.

As for the VCR, how do you have it hooked up? If it's just hooked up to the
output of the cable box, and the cable box can control the VCR with a remote
'mouse' when you set it to VCR, then there's nothing you can do if you want
to have that functionality. Personally, I'd split the cable from the wall
and hook it up directly to the VCR and only use the VCR for the nonscrambled
analog cable stations and not record from the box. Other posters suggested
looking into a Cable HD DVR box for digital and HD stations.
