Speech to the Nation

Regarding the State of -- Speech to the Nation -- Whatever you want to
call it:

My satellite feed for CBS west had some kind of horrible echo on it.
CBS seemed to be the only station that was broadcasting the "pre-show"
in HD, but once the "Speech to the Nation" started, the echo drove me
away. NBC and ABC both had a view of the Rotunda before the president
arrived, but all of them were in SD with pillar bars.

NBC was in HD for the speech, but it had some horrible top and bottom
banners that were distracting. Don't put a banner at the top AND the
bottom saying "Live..." and "Speech to the Nation" (or whatever you
want to call it). I finally settled on ABC's feed which had only a
small transparent ABC logo in the lower right. I don't like those
horrible banners; they take up too much of the screen. Fox, to my
extreme disappointment, was in SD with pillar bars. Usually, they are
in the forefront of HD (even broadcasting such schlock and nonsense as
Cops in HD); but on the other hand, they are not really credible in the
news or important events like "Speech to the Nation" department.

I forgot to check CNN and/or Fox News, etc. Anybody else have any
feedback?

I tried finding the speech but every channel just had this nature show with
a chimp trying to speak coherently.

I'm not absolutely certain on this but I believe the video is a 'pool'
feed meaning there is 1 video service that feeds to all the networks.
Imagine each news service having their own cameras and production
truck. You'd hear comments like at the Rose Parade about 'best camera
locations" and 'best sound" not to mention the equipment all over the
place.

BTW, it's called the 'State of the Union' address and it's
constitutionally mandated. I didn't see the chimp though.

CBS cleared up the echo effect quickly. It appeared, though, that Bush's
speech was much lower in volume than the rest of the audio -- clapping,
cheers, etc. This was true on all channels I tried. HD was impressive ==
could see one person in the audience sleeping and another reading a book
during the talk.

Not sure why I'm responding to someone so deep into his bong he didn't
even realize that the speech was called "The State Of The Union" (and is
required by Article II of the Constitution), but here goes...

Geez, guys. Lighten up.

The Constitution says that the president shall report from time to time on
the state of the union. It doesn't say every year but the pols know an
campaign opportunity when they see one.

Yeah, which is why the SotU is always given right the week before an
election

Events such as State of the Union, presidential debates, or addresses from
the Oval Office (remember the speech Bush gave in March 2003 to announce
the first targeted bombings in Baghdad?) use a single "pool" feed which
all the networks tap into. Most likely the cameras used last night are
the ones C-SPAN uses to broadcast House sessions, and they are (a) SD; and
(b) fixed in place.

Great observation. That explains why the picture didn't really look HD to
me. Didn't figure out for myself.

If that was SD then I wasted a lot of money buying a HD set. Looked
positively great!
