Toshiba "Smurf-O-Vision"

Howdy all, been pretty happy with my 57hdx82 even though it has the green burst
issue. Has anyone else turned on their set and had the picture tinted blue?
It's as if one of the guns wasn't working... my uneducated guess would be the
red... Also has anyone else experienced red burst at power off? The red has
only done it twice but the green burst happens at every power off.

FWIW I called Tosh and explained all 3 problems and the rep said "oh, it
shouldn't do that!" and advised me to call my dealer for service/warranty
work.

Just wondering, I'd heard the green burst issue was pretty prevalent but hadn't
heard about the red burst or "smurf vision."

I purchased my 57HDX82 on Feb. 18, 2003. It worked fine for almost 19
weeks. Then on June 29, it had too much red. It would come and go. I
called my dealer the following day and they sent their repair guy to
my house. During his examination, it sort of blew up. No picture, no
sound. It was picked up and returned to the shop the following day.

I contacted them a week later to discover it needed three parts. The
Red Gun, something called an anode, and some other part. Problem was
the Red gun was on back order until mid August. So, I waited.

The middle of August arrived (a Monday), and I called the dealer
again. This time I spoke to the service manager. He apologized all
over himself. Checked and said Red gun had just come in that day and
that I would have set back by end of week. Friday came and went and I
neither got my set back nor did I hear from the dealer. So on Monday I
called again.

I was told that Toshiba had packed the wrong tube (in the correct
box). It was about an inch longer than the correct part. The tech
tried to make it work but could not get it to converge. But it
shouldn't be a problem because Toshiba had plenty of the right part in
stock now. Problem was that the anode was now glued to the wrong tube
and they would need to get a new one of those. Guess what? Toshiba was
out of them until end of August! So on August 29, nearly 9 weeks after
going in for repair, they returned my set to me.

As I feared, sitting around a repair shop for 2 months had taken a
toll on the cabinet. There was a gouge out of the wooden cabinet where
something had obviously bumped into it. Additional visual inspection
revealed two places where the plastic trim had been marred and the
conrol cover no longer fit correctly. I am still trying to settle with
my dealer on the physical damages.

Toshiba has offered me a 6 month warranty extension. Needless to say,
I am ****ed. The TV was in the shop almost half as long as it had
functioned in my home and as puny as the warranty extension is, what
good is it if Toshiba can't supply parts for their TVs?

Furthurmore, when the set was returned to the shop it looked new. Now
it is blemished.

I am not sure I could in good conscience recommend Toshiba big screens
to any one.

From my, so far, limited experience Toshiba has been easy to work with. Of
course the repair guy was booked solid till next Monday (9/8).

In all fairness, it sounds like much of your problem could be the dealer.
Sounds like they might be passing the buck. Hopefully my experience will be
different. The same dealer repaired a Mits 45VA2 (rear projection) and I was
satisfied with their service.

If I understand what I've been finding, the "burst" issue with the guns is
irrepairable and a new set may be in order... if that is the case my guess is
my dealer might no be so friendly all of a sudden... we'll see.

For what it's worth, in addition to my dealer, I spoke directly with
Toshiba on 6 seperate occasions. They were less than helpful. The
physical damage to a 57 inch projection set while unappreciated was
not unexptected by me since it sat in the shop for nearly two months.
I hope you have better luck.

Our 9 month old Toshiba 50 inch has, on several occasions, shown us
the blue smurf-o-vision. It occurs only when initially turning the set
on, and I think only when it's been off for awhile. To fix it, we turn
the set off and then right back on.

Well, that's not encouraging news... The dealer had to reschedule the repair
appt. from today (9/8) to Thursday (9/11) because "some parts" haven't come
in... Oh well, at least the tv is watchable for now...

Just thought I'd let everybody know... service tech showed up on time today,
asked what problems i was having verified the green & red burst for himself and
promptly replaced all three guns.

Spent a lot of time adjusting the guns and color temperature (said he got it as
close to 65K as he could). He did a lot of work under a blanket since our
living room is WAY too bright during the day. Whole job took him 4.5 hours.

Long story short: picture is beautiful again and I'm one very happy customer of
Bjorn's Audio & Video! Lucky me for once... no problems with Tosh or the
dealer!

Follow up:

Two days ago I received an email from a Mr. Donahue at Toshiba. He
said he had read my posting to this news group and wanted to talk to
me about my problems to see if he could help in any way.

I phoned him that afternoon. He was quite nice, asking only a few
questions and saying he would try to call me back later that same day.

Within a couple of hours, he did in fact call me back. He stated that
my TV would be replaced with a new one.

The following day a new 57HDX82 was delivered and is working well.

Thanks Toshiba and Mr. Donahue!

Sweet! Glad to hear they made it right for you. Luckily for me I didn't have
to go over the dealer's head to get mine fixed.

Our first VCR was a s-vhs Toshiba. That was one nice unit. Broke my heart
when the drive belts gave up the ghost. Now I'm wishing I had gotten it fixed,
had the easiest to use interface of any VCR I've owned.
