Discovery Channel will be on Sky High-Definition!

Could that be to do with the fact that they're jealous of the money that Sky makes? -- Conor Windows & Outlook/OE in particular, shipped with settings making them as open to entry as a starlet in a porno. Whereas I strongly suspect that you are engaging in wishful thinking! All of C4/C5 (and others) seem to find Sky very professional and will quite likely go with them for HD as well! Ask Sony, Panasonic, Tivo, ITV, the BBC etc. what they think about Sky. But ask them in private. Many broadcasters using Sky encryption do so because they were railroaded into it. Sky are masters of the "offer you can't refuse". Greg Dyke's autobiography goes into a fair amount of detail regarding the BBC's move to FTA. Nothing that regular readers of this newsgroup won't already know, but you're left with no doubt as to Dyke's opinion of Sky. |

That seems most unlikely. There are many much richer companies around yet I doubt that any of the companies I mentioned have any strong opinion about those. Unfortunately we are unlikely to ever have any proof either way. But as both of them re-signed encryption deals fairly recently, it seems pretty unlikely that they DO want to. It has been suggested that the contracts between Sky and C4/C5 actually oblige them to use the encryption. That would certainly make sense for channels where Sky paid C4 - like E4 or FilmFour - but I very much doubt that there would be any obligation to use the service for the FTV encoding. After all, C4 and C5 are the clients there - THEY are paying money to Sky for that service. That is their choice. And why should C4 and C5 be so pleased with Sky when the BBC and ITV clearly aren't, I wonder? Because ITV have viewed Sky as their mortal enemies since even before the analogue launch days, and because the BBC has the most to lose if Sky becomes the dominant satellite platform. Remember, the BBC's motives in going FTA on satellite, and in launching Freeview, are solely to maintain the status quo that everyone who has a television must be *forced* to pay for the BBC. It is their publicly-stated aim to ensure that they are never forced to be funded only by people who *want* their services, they want *everyone* to have to pay, and to have to *keep* paying. |

ITV were running press campaigns and trying to get Sky ruled illegal back before Sky even launched or had an opportunity to shaft anyone. Maybe the real reason is that they're just scared of competition. |

I suggest that these suggestions may be false. You can 'suggest' anything you like. Doesn't make it true. |
