Question: Pros & Cons of Hughes DirecTV rcvrs
Hi
I'm looking for some new (replacement) DTV receivers to replace my RCA 5th generation ones. I need only 1 HD and 3 std receivers My primary criteria for all 4 is basically three-fold; 1) I want the best guide (RCA's guide is lousy) 2) **Must** display onscreen CallerID (this is a deal-breaker) 3) universal remote (RF remote would be a plus) The HD receiver must also meet 1-2-3 above plus offer OTA reception. I did subscribe to D*s' HD package for a while, but don't at the present time. We have ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC PBS and WB all available OTA in HD. D* wasn't worth the additional 11 bux for how little we watched any of it. I do *NOT* need the ability to RECORD in HD, but I'm not opposed to the idea of combining the DVR function in the HD rcvr if it's cost effective to do so or if there's a "deal". I wouldn't mind combining the TIVO function in one of the std. def receivers. Right now I'm 'burning' two receivers for that function, 1 to watch tv and 1 feeding the TIVO so we can watch whatever and record whatever else. I presently have a series-1 stand-alone TIVO with a lifetime sub. Do we still need a sub for these things to get the guide and work? Can my lifetime TIVO sub be transferred? If not, what (if any) is the guide cost to subscribe a combo DVR/Sat receiver (with a great guide and onscreen CallerID) (any subscription cost over and above the $4.99 addt'l receiver cost?) I have an old Hughes E86 (HD) and we really *Love* the onscreen guide of that rascal, altho it needs replacement as we're starting to have some problems with it, not to mention the fact that it runs scalding hot. Some input on the selection process would be welcomed. Thanks! MF |
