World Cup will be broadcast in HDTV
 

according to Evesham Technology (www.lowestontheweb.com) who are have a
new advertising campaign in the UK press entitled "Are you HD ready
for the World Cup?" detailing offers on HDTV widescreen LCD TVs. The
advert (in todays Times page 38) also explains "High Definition
Television broadcasts will be with us this year. Will you be ready?"
inviting you make sure you purchase a HDTV to view the FIFA World Cup
in its full HDTV glory.

I'm going to phone Evesham tomorrow to get full details of who will
be broadcasting the World Cup in HDTV in the UK and how to receive
this, but this is good news from me (see my previous post here and to
aus.tv "Will the FIFA World Cup be on HDTV?".

Mugs indeed. Although this year we can be hopeful as premiere (germany)
and tps/M6 (france) have announced they are broadcasting in HD. And the
host broadcaster has some good info on the feeds they are providing to
the networks:

So its just a matter of the networks deciding to pay for the HD feeds.
BBC have announced they intend to have a HD 'trial' running by
mid-year, many are hoping that that trial is the World Cup.

So it seems like Evesham are being a bit premature in advertising in
this way as it is not *guaranteed* that the World Cup will be broadcast
in HDTV in the UK. Is this something the Advertising Standard
Authority http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/ may be interested in as their
advertising may be misleading? If it were not broadcast in HDTV I
guess consumers who had bought a TV based on their advertsting may have
cause for complain and compensation?

I thought I heard someone on BBC radio, though I think it was an independant
"expert" saying that the BBC was going to broadcast the World Cup in HD, but
only from the Crystal Palace Transmitter.

Astra satellite, I notice that there are several promo channels up and
running already.

The BBC are meant to be doing _some_ HD trials in London.

It does not say what transmitter is involved, and I would guess that it
would be relatively low power.

NTL are not expected to launch their HD DVR until later in the year and
TW well they are very much a viable option. If SKY haven't launched by
June then they will be a laughing stock and well since the BBC will be FTA
on Dsat and surely offering something by June you won't need to use SKY
hardware anyway.
DTT trials in London are expected by could be closed to the public and
existing hardware is useless for HD anyway so you can't rely on that.



It's possible there will be some WC games in HD offered by a UK broadcaster
but if you want to make sure then Premiere are showing all 64 games in HD
and with suitable hardware and sub can be watched in the UK.

Rummaging around in the loft the other day, looking for some ancient beta
tapes (some going back to the early Eighties with Comic Strip episodes) to
copy on to DVD, I chanced upon some from the early Nineties, recorded from
analogue Sat1 and RTL,

These channels were always a must for the more studious among us us who
wanted to brush up on our German on Friday and Saturday evenings, after
returning home from the pub.

Note the careful use of the word 'advertising' in what I wrote above.
The ASA distinguishes between 'advertising' (which they cover) and
'editorial' (which they don't) on websites, and indeed the bit you quote
explicitly includes sales promotions (and elsewhere they state they
cover banner, popup ads, and in search engine results - ads "in paid
for space"). Of course a single web page could contain both editorial
and advertising - just as a normal print page could.
