new TV buyers unaware of digital

I've had some interesting phone calls since Christmas.

It might surprise some of you, but quite a few people who buy a new telly
don't know whether it is digital/analogue or analogue only. Sometimes they
think it's digital when it isn't; sometimes they don't think it's digital
when it is; but most often they are unaware of the whole concept. It is, as
the archbishop said in an entirely different context, a bit of a grey area
for many people.

This is where the writer would normally comment in a witty, amusing, but
most of all erudite manner on the facts he's laid out in the preceding
paragraph, but have you seen the time? I'm off to bed. I'll leave it to you.

Bill

And quite snowy too come 2008.

The easy way to sort this would be to force (by the Gov prhaps) the
manufactirers to make tv's with dual tuners. Then there would be no problem.
But of course, the manufatirers will continue to seel anolog tuners only so
in a couple of years time they hope people will then (wrongly think) they
"need" to buy a new TV.

Set makers were never, as in France, forced to put scart connections on.
Thought all or most TV sets were not made in UK so doubt unless the UK
digital system becomes worldwide they will not put digital tuners in to a
great extent.
When switch off of anologue comes I would prefere a TV with no tuner in,
just a monitor for a box (s).

I have a Sharp with both analogue & digital tuners. The on-screen
displays, as well as the manual, are in 10 different languages so it's not
a UK only model.

This concept was tried by Philips about 20 years ago (Matchline) but it
didn't catch on. I suspect people, in general, don't like lots of boxes.

I think you're confusing stupidity with ignorance.

It could well be a UK model only. There are many more than 10 different
languages spoken in this multi-cultural society.

Richard.

Was Matchline ever a component system? The one I remember is the Sony
Profeel.

I think people are more accepting of seperate boxes now than they were
back then.

Yes, but that was then, when most people didn't have more than a
single VCR under the TV, now with DVD players, digital video
recorders, 5.1 sound systems, satellite receivers and DTT tuners not
to mention PC based media etc. I suspect people are not going to
worry about not having an actual tuner within the TV set, it's not as
though they are short of external tuners and would need another
external box!
