DirecTV 5 LNB dish install question

We are upgrading our triple LNB to the newer AT9 KaKu 5 LNB HD so that
we can receive local channels HDTV. When the installer 'swaps' the
dish, will he need to drill new holes in the roof or do they just change
the dish itself and leave the bracket in place?

Both the bracket and mast are larger than the old ones. Replacement is
required.

I haven't seen the new dish in the flesh, but the pictures are a bit scarey.
I'm afraid this will push many people back to cable.

No offense, but I don't think there's anything on God's green Earth that
would even drag me back to cable. I'm presently running with two (2) full
size 1-meter dishes and an OTA parabolic. How much worse could the ka/ku
combo be than that?

Screw the homeowner's Assn.

No offense taken.

What if someone offered you a fiber-optic connection with 200 hi bandwidth
TV channels and hi-speed internet for $100.00/month?

If the service provider's name was Time-Warner (or one of their resellers)
they could keep it. I've really been seriously and permanently soured by
the utterly deplorable level of customer service by that outfit. They
could come to my door offering 200 channels free for 2 years including
premiums and PPVs and I honestly think I would pass just to avoid having
to deal with them ever again.

TWC presently has two 48-strand fiber cables in the easement behind my
home, which they plowed-in 5 years ago using a device known as a "missle".
They broke both my and my neighbor's sewer line with this installation
method. God only knows how many others'. After we excavated to find the
blockage it took $900 in attorney fees to get them to agree to cover the
costs to fix the sewer line and restore the yard. SBC came out, looked at
it and said it was TWC fiber. TWC came out, looked at it and swore it
wasn't theirs. When my contractor reached for his hydraulic lopper they
suddenly changed their tune. What a bunch of idiots.

They did that in the backyard of the neighbor behind me a couple of
months ago. But only a two-house stretch, so I think they were laying
the pipe to replace a bad stretch of buried coax. There was a big 5/8"
coax draped over the wooden fences. Not like I cared much, because I
have no interest in getting cable, and even less now that I have a
couple of ATSC tuners and a real antenna.

It's good to know the word for it, though. I called it a "mole".
Apparently it digs a 2-3" hole by compacting the dirt ahead of it. Then
they stick a half of a coke can over the end of a piece of pipe and
shove it through the hole.

Lovely. Fortunately my sewer is in the street, so the sewer pipe is in
the front yard. But would you rather have had a backhoe digging your
back yard?

That's just what I would have done. "It's not yours? Then you won't
mind if I cut it, will you?"

That would be great, but I don't think Verizon FIOS will get to my area
for another year or two. Is there something else I'm missing?

Bill
