Problems with Sutton Coldfield after about 16:00

Hi Everyone,

Everyday now I get interference from about 16:00 in the afternoon. So
much that my digibox breaks up. Not sure what could be causing it but
wondered if anyone else is having the same problem. I'm receiving from
Coventry CV6 1.

My Humax is normally 40 - 50% Strength and 100% Quality... after 16:00
the quality just jumps up and down and the picture continually breaks
up.

Any ideas on how I can trace this?

TIA,

Matt

That's about the time the heating system wakes up in my house. maybe it
does in yours?

Switch to an analogue channel when you have the problem.
See if you can see the effects.

Yes, I get interference lines on analog when it starts happening, like
little white ones across the screen every couple of seconds. I can't
think whats causing it, maybe it is the heating? i'll do some testing
tomorrow if I get time.

I just can't think what would be different between the day and
afternoon/night time.

Turn things off one at a time. It could be a neighbour's equipment though.
Anyway it sounds to me as if you need a better aerial in any case. Why not
get that fixed and see if the problem persists?

Hi Bill,

I'm in a bad area as it is. I'm not supposed to recieve Freeview via
the post code check but I put up a very tall pole, boosted the
connection and I do get it with no problems until now. It's been
working fine for over two years. As I type (11:26am) its fine, but no
doubt at around 16:00 or after it will play up again. I haven't
actually been there when it goes from good to bad because being
Christmas i've been away a lot. Due to that also I don't know when its
exactly happening, but it was probably after christmas.

Something tells me that maybe one of the neighbours got a new toy for
Christmas. It's strange though - no doubt after the next couple of
days I should be around more to figure out whats going on. Thinking
about it, they've been doing road works outside for a while and have
finished around the same time... maybe it's linked to the street
lights? I can see this being fun!

Thanks,

Matt

You'll obviously be susceptible to RFI if field strength is low.

Were the streetlights involved in the roadworks? I have only known
streetlighting cause this sort of problem on one occasion. It turned out
that one of the sodium lights was faulty. I don't know in what way it was
faulty, except that it seemed a bit flickery and it was sending out RF all
the way across the UHF band. The effect on analogue was to place faint thin
broken horizontal white lines across the picture, with the body of the lines
moving slowly up or down. The effect on digital was worsened BER, causing
drop-out.

Oh, and once I had a problem with a garage forecourt light but that was
obviously faulty, since it emitted very little light but a massive amount of
RF!

Wildly varying 'quality' readings are often the result of impulse
interference. Mind you the same can sometimes be said about other apparently
constant interference types, such as co-channel.

Maybe they go all out and put the central heating on just for Christmas, or
it could be Christmas lights on a timer :/

So am I . . . but reception and decoding is fine except that we can
get everything but for the basic five channels . . . super quality,
stable image and sound but we have to unplug the digibox and go back to
the direct aerial plug in to watch the original five channels . . .

It has always been like that so we have got used to it but I'm a little
suspicious since no one else receiving from Sutton Coldfield has
mentioned restrited numbers of channels.

Anyone got any ideas? We have a Bush iD digibox ny the way and it
searches the output from Sutton Coldfield each time we ask it to and
comes up only with the new channels!

Also . . no RF interference here, no central heating (we have real
fires, closed burners atually, using waste packing wood and MDF), the
streetlights are well away and thee are no high power antennae in the
area!

Hi Bill,

Today is the first day i've watched it through the day. It's been fine
until 16:10 when some of the street lights came on, it was just the odd
break up. But when all the street lights came on @ about 16:20 it
started to break up a bit more but not as bad as it has been.

As I write its getting worse (16:42), i'm guessing the lights warm up
and is causing more interference. A lot of the street lights are new
outside due to the extensive roadworks. I'm guessing its the new ones
causing the problem as they have only recently been switched on.

Anybody got an idea who I call about this? I'm guessing the council
but if there is a way I can bypass the getting passed around stage I
would :-)

Thanks,

Matt
