Black borders for non-HDTV video feeds...
Hello,
I am using a HDTV tuner in my PC. I wasn't sure if this was normal for regular TVs with HDTV tuners. With non-HDTV for TV shows, do they also show black borders on all four sides? If so, then how come tuners/TVs don't automatically zoom in? I don't mind the top and bottom black bars due to wide screen format. Thank you in advance. -- "An ant is a wise creature for itself, but it is a shrewd thing in an orchard or garden." --Francis Bacon /\___/\ / /\ /\ \ Phillip (Ant) @ http://antfarm.ma.cx (Personal Web Site) | |o o| | Ant's Quality Foraged Links (AQFL): http://aqfl.net \ _ / Please remove ANT if replying by e-mail. ( ) It's normal if the station is sending a SD picture in an HD format. In my area only the NBC and PBS stations send a separate SD channel(s). On my HDTV Wonder if I change the aspect ratio from auto to 4:3 a SD picture in an HD format picture will fill my 4:3 monitors screen. An HD picture will also fill the screen but the ends will be cut off. Which is best depends on what I'm watching. It's kind of like using zoom. |

I'm running MythTV on the PC, and the set top box is an RCA ATSC11. Personally, I have the default turned off in the PC. That way SD broadcast come in full screen, and HD, and SD over HD broadcast come in as 16:9. Sometimes I'll zoom SD being broadcast as HD and sometimes I won't.:-) I've got the RCA hooked up to an analog TV, so I set it to 16:9 zoom I think for a default on HD channels and regular on SD channels, I think. Automatic just wouldn't suit everyone I don't believe. -- Want to control your HTPC. Tired of paying for guide data? don't know about your situation, and the subject matter is not common to
me, but with the LCD TV/MONITOR I have, the black border appears with all the formats, varied due to the format opted for, but are symmetrical. vfe |

Since this happens with HD signals carrying SD material, your tv and or
your PC can't know that it's not real 16:9 720p/1080i HD. So there's no way for them to adjust on the fly. |

At night, watching the HD sub channel only gives me top and bottom borders. Most of the rest of the stations I get are HD only. Then 4 borders are normal during say the news, which is always SD in HD. The station is sending the side borders. Your horizontal borders are probably a different shade of "black" than the vertical ones. I'd think a computer could detect the black borders but when the SD picture is blown up it can be kind of ugly. At least it is on my 1280X1024 monitor and would be worse on a larger screen. If you can change the aspect ratio settings when watching SD, SD in HD and HD it should become obvious. |
