Can someone explain this one to me?

I bought a DVI to HDMI cable to run between my cable converter box (DVI
output) to my Hitachi LCD RPTV (HDMI). I was using the component
outputs/inputs. Picture looks great, but now I've lost half of my HBO
channels. When I put the old component cable back on everything is fine,
but when go to the DVI/HDMI cable I lose about every other HBO channel.

Seems to me I either have a picture or I don't and I don't understand how I
would lose part of the channels.

Anyone have any ideas?

Jack:

It sounds like you are running into HDCP (High Definition Copy Protection
Flag) Problems, as the result of using the HDMI input on the Hitachi.

This doesn't have to be a bad thing in the long run. I use components
for my STB and am saving my HDMI interface for the coming HD DVD
players - you might consider doing the same. Besides, it just so
happens that I get better PQ from my STB over component cables than
with HDMI.

I get everything, including Starz and my HD package (which includes an
additional HBOHD channel) just fine. My HBO channels start a channel 550
which I don get and then I get every other channel up about 556 where I
start getting them all, except for the final one, which is a HBO HDW
channel. If I am running into a HDCP issue, wouldn't that affect all
channels? BTW, both the STB and the TV are set-up for HDCP, so it's not
supposed to be an issue, right?

Well the new cable DVI or HDMI are transferring your picture in digital
format and HDCP is a new HD transmission protocol that was put in place
so that people would not "steal" the signal. It is sort like HTTPS for
digital video. The source and destination has to negotiate what sort of
operation is allowed. For example if the destination was a computer or a
tape recorder than the source could just shut off the signal.

It seems that in your case your cable box think that your tv is not
authorized to view. You can try to see if you could swap your cable box
or if there is a firmware upgrade for your tv.
