Will the FIFA Word Cup on be on HDTV?

I understand that HDTV is already live in Australia, and my question to
the Aussies here is has it been confirmed whether the FIFA World Cup
2006 in Germany will be shown on HDTV there? I understand this is the
first time the Australian soccer team will be in the completion and
there will be much excitement and the mouth-watering prospect of an
Australia playing against second seed England.

If the World Cup is on HDTV in Australia, I think this increases the
likelihood of the event being part of the BBC's trial of HDTV in the
UK which will be available to selected digital satellite and cable
viewers from mid-2006.

I'm thinking of getting a digibox from FreeSatFromSky so I can sign
up for the trial as soon as it is launched. The BBC (and partner
broadcasters) did a great job when interactive TV was first trialled at
the last World Cup, and imagine they will also do a good job in the
HDTV space.

Cheers,

David

Yes HDTV is live, and no it isn't the first time Australia has been in
the World Cup.

Would be great if it was was HDTV, haven't heard anything myself.
Fingers crossed.

Sorry, you are correct. On their only other appearance, in West
Germany in 1974, Australia lost twice and drew once, failing to score
and bowing out at the first stage.

I think they are well placed to do a lot better this time, and maybe
cause an upset!

I dunno but the qualifier was awful. Grainy to the max. And that was local.

We will find out if we are better place this time after tomorrow
morning's (our time) draw. If we get drawn with Brazil, Holland and
Serbia and Montenagro (that would be some Group of Death!) then we
could struggle to do that well.

Any UK digibox you buy now will not support HD.

Quite, I'd much sooner use a stand or a cabinet...Much sturdier to put the
TV on ;-))

Is the current thinking that only those people who subscribe to Sky's
HDTV offering will be able to take part in the BBC HDTV trial? I have
no desire to be a Sky subscriber (too expnseive compared to BBC
offering) but would like to be a member of the BBC HDTV trial. Is this
scenario likely?

I guess I need to wait until the BBC release more details on the nature
of the trial. I have looked on Digital Spy but not seen any articles
going into specific details.

Cheers,

Richard

Is it likely that the only way to get on the BBC HDTV trial will be to
be a Sky HDTV subscriber. I have no desire to subsribe to Sky. The
BBC channel offering (for £11/month) is far better value than Sky's
more expensive offerings IMHO. I wonder if it will be possible to go
on the HDTV trial without being a Sky subcriber?

I guess I need to wait until the BBC release more details on the HDTV
trial. I have not seen any implementation details on Digital Spy.
