*new* to the NG..SKY High Definition question..
Having just splashed out on a new 40' Sony Bravia LCD TV, I must say that
the picture is awful!!!!!!! That being said, it looks amazing when rigged up to an xbox 360, reassuring me that HD is incredible, and not just the demo of fishes in comet or curry's. I want to hop on the hi-def bandwagon!! Does anyone have any clues about sky's hi def service in terms of how it's going to be rolled out, approx costings, timings etc? thnaks! |

I've seen a 40-inch Sony Bravia LCD TV in my local TV shop recently and the picture looked pretty fair to me just off the internal Freeview tuner - certainly as good as my oldish plasma. HDMI delivered pictures from DVD also looked good, although I couldn't see any real difference between the 576p picture and the upscaled 720p and 1080i versions. If you're getting an 'awful' picture that it sounds like (a) you haven't tweaked it enough or (b) it's duff. How does yours compare to a display model in a shop on non-HDMI sources/off-air? These things aren't cheap, so putting-up with an 'awful' picture doesn't sound right to me, unless of course you've just won big-time on the lottery and can afford to go and buy something else, perhaps donating the Bravia to a man servant. Heh. Clem LoL...No, I havn't won the lottery...the biggest challenge I faced when choosing a large(ish) sized LCD from almost every retailer was " the picture looks grainy because theres interference and a shared ariel amongst all the TV's".....not being savvy to these things, i assumed it to be a reasonable point, whilst glancing over at the hi-def images across the way. I do believe that it is a question of tweaking the settings, and I do relaise that perhaps the pic isnt going to be as good as a traditional CRT. on non-HDMI sources, I'd have to say my pic is somwehat better than the store displays... i got a samsund HDMI dvd player with it , and whilst the reviews on the dvd said "it would bring hi-def restoration to your dvd collection'' id say that was certianly stretching the truth a little bit. Until Hi def comes out ( hence this posting) i suppose i'll keep tweaking..the TV's manual is not much help!!) |

The Samsung is not a very good DVD player. That aside, I wonder if you have studied the correct way to connect and set up your digibox and TV, as described in the FAQ? -- Digibox problem? : A reboot solves 90% of these. To answer the original question - go to sky.com/hd There's very little info at present, but according to the site Sky roll out HDTV in 2006. There are some prerequisites and no pricing info is on the site ATM. |
