Update 3: The BBC Intergrated Media Player trial and DRM......how to hack?
For those who don't know, the BBC are trialing a service that allows
participants to book/download BBC TV programmes to their PC. The big problem with the service is that the programmes (Microsoft wmv files) are protected by Microsoft's DRM technology and they expire (i.e. they are unplayable) after 7/8 days after the original broadcast date. In my last post to this group (do a google in 'groups') I confirmed that it was possible to use the hack detailed on this page...... http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.ph...&page=15&pp=20 ........to remove the DRM restrictions. That method depends on using an installation of Windows XP that preferably includes Windows Media Player Version 9 (WMP9) and definitely depends on not having installed the Microsoft update KB891122 which 'tightens up' DRM security. Unfortunately, the BBC have now changed their software so that now you can't run their media player (IMP) without installing the above Microsoft update. The result is that the above method no longer works. There is a rumour on the above thread that a new version of the hack is available but as yet I've not been able to find it. I will post back when anything changes. Peter |

So, fool, please explain how downloading something and then watching it after 9 days rather than 8 would deprive someone of royalty income. Actually, since you chose to use the word 'steal', perhaps you could further explain how the OP would benefit financially from doing this. |

If he keeps the recording then he is very unlikely to pay for a copy. Why do you think they are bothering to make the downloads time limited? Remember that this is a trial, just because the current bit rate is low doesn't mean that it will always be so. |

Its neutered, extremely carefully selected, well edited then delivered by a song and dance team masquerading as newscasters. If I didn't have to buy a license I wouldn't subscribe to it. I object to being forced to pay for a service I would otherwise not use. Its like being forced to contribute to the local brothel. I don't have to so I don't. That's the way it should be with the Beeb. Simple as that. But any subscription or advertising revenue funded station will use (at least some of your) money on services that you either don't like or want to watch! Please feel free to try and find a clue... |
