Question: DishPVR and OTA HD Signals?
I'm a Dish subscriber who is looking into a HD TV. Currently I have a
Dish PVR, and I don't want to give this up - but I also want to get HD feeds of the local networks. Is there any way I can get an OTA HD antenna and send it through the PVR so I have recording capabilities? (I don't think so, but I want to make sure...) Thanks in advance! |

Larry, Only the 921 and 942 Receivers are able to receive and record OTA digital signals. Locals are not available in HD from the satellite at this time. |

The 942 looks like it can do everything I want - once I can afford it. ;) |

Thanks - I'll call and ask about that. $700 sure seems like alot since I'd still need an OTA antenna and Dish wouldn't even be supplying me with the networks in HD. I read that I still need to subscribe to the Dish Network local channels if I wanted show information in the on-screen guide. I assume this means that if I select the UHF/VHF channel in the guide to record a show, the 942 will use the antenna and record the HD version of the show, not the Dish-provided SDTV version? Also, do I need to subscribe to the HD-Pak at $9.99 per month if I don't want any of those channels? Or is that required with an HD-DVR? Thanks for your help.... |

wrote: Larry wrote: Thanks - I'll call and ask about that. I sent an E-mail to explaining that I was a long time subscriber that had just bought an HDTV and I was already hooked on DVR's. I was not prepared to pay $799 to buy a 942 and if I could not lease a 942 I would reluctantly have to consider leaving Dish. I got an affirmative E-mail within an hour. I'm actually giving some thought to giving up Dish and going to cable - even if they let me lease the 942 (thought that's a big factor). Basically, I have 2 requirements - 1) HD locals, and 2) a PVR/DVR. And it seems cable may be a much better option. For example, one cable company would have the following charges (I won't name the name, because I'm not a troll or salesman for anyone): SETUP: $0 installation, $0 equipment fees MONTHLY: $39.90 for service (no movie channel premiums) + $9.95 DVR fee (HD is free, and the std. DVR can be upgraded to an HD DVR at no cost) for a total of $49.85 (for the first year, then up to ~$65.) vs. with Dish (who I've been with for ~3 years) SETUP (going from regular to HD): $699 for HD-PVR + $20-$50 (?) for an OTA HD antenna MONTHLY: $31.99 for Top60 + $4.99 DVR = $36.98. So Dish is about $13/mo cheaper for the first year, then about $30/mo cheaper. But at $700+ setup, it would take approx. 32 months for it to be worth it. And with MPEG-4 theoretically coming by then, that's too far off for me to see the savings. Plus, I wouldn't even be getting the HD locals from Dish, - I'd be at the mercy of OTA reception. (And FWIW, DirecTV is somewhere in the middle. Their HD-DVR is $500, and the monthly costs would be about $59. But I'm in the NY DMA, so they carry my HD locals on their sat feed from what I've read). ... YOU will decide that as the analog and digital channels are different items. Say you have a Channel 4 (analog) locally. That Channel will show in the Guide as 004-00. Its digital version will show as 004-01. Again, to have the Guide info for the locals you must subscribe to the satellite Local Package. If you set a timer for 004-00 it will record from the satelite. If you select 004-01 it will record the digital OTA signal. Thanks for explaining this. Also, do I need to subscribe to the HD-Pak at $9.99 per month if I don't want any of those channels? Or is that required with an HD-DVR? If you buy the 942 you do not have to subscribe to any HD programming. If you lease you must AT LEAST subscibe to the HD Package. Oh, OK. I was led to believe otherwise from things I've read. You just made me go back and retype the comparison above, because I had included the HD Pak. ;) Thank you again for discussing this with me - I appreciate your information. |
