In article , ray says...
I noticed Freeview stations are now repeating what was on last year - the loop seems to have started again. I could almost predict which programmes would be on as they were in the same order last year. ROFL..same as Sky then but £40 cheaper than I'm paying. -- Conor "You're not married, you haven't got a girlfriend and you've never seen Star Trek? Good Lord!" - Patrick Stewart, Extras. |

The phrasing is that the new channels will be using 'part of Top Up TV's own Freeview capacity'. That rather seems to imply to me that, if anything, Top Up's broadcasting hours and / or number of streams could be reduced to accomodate the new channels. But that would be unsubstantiated speculation on my part: Rather like your original post. |

The more stations crammed in, the more income and lower quality. Look at the state DABradio is in now - it sounds crap compared to FM stereo. You're preaching to the converted, pal! BTW, the person who's now in charge of "regulating" picture quality at Ofcom is the same person that set the minimum bit rate levels for DAB in 1998! Mr Mark Thomas, Head of Broadcasting Technical Policy at Ofcom, who's in charge of "regulating" "quality" of both digital radio and digital TV, and the ex-Director of "Engineering" at the Radio Authority. -- Steve - www.digitalradiotech.co.uk - Digital Radio News & Info Find the cheapest Freeview & DAB prices: http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/fr..._receivers.htm http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/dab_radios.htm |

The phrasing is that the new channels will be using 'part of Top Up TV's own Freeview capacity'. I read this originally: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds26370.html and admittedly I did mis-interpret it. But see below. But that would be unsubstantiated speculation on my part: Rather like your original post. I think the reason I thought what I did was simply that Top-Up TV only has 5 streams, so reducing the number of streams to say 4 or 3 would significantly alter Top-Up TV's proposition, and I think it far more likely that Top-Up TV simply shaves a little bit of bandwidth from each of its 5 streams to allow five to launch a new channel. -- Steve - www.digitalradiotech.co.uk - Digital Radio News & Info Find the cheapest Freeview & DAB prices: http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/fr..._receivers.htm http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/dab_radios.htm |

Why don't they just kick off the price conning channels like bidup, pricedrop, QVC and Ideal World and the game conning channel that now occupies Channel 4's old Big Brother stream. |

Err, because in the real world there are legal niceties like contracts and due process. When their contracts come up for renewal no doubt some of the dross will be costed off the platform. |
