sharp shrill high pitched noise

Lately on my 35" Mitsubishi 8 year old television, there is a very high
pitched noise coming from the television. It does not seem to affect
performance but I can certainly hear it when the sound passages are quiet.
What's happening??

You're watching too much Rosie O'Donnell.

It's been a loooonnnngggg time since I had anything to do with TV
repair (I was
LITERALLY a kid working in my father's TV repair shop). BUT, this
sounds an awful lot like electrical arcing somewhere near the
high-voltage (50,000V!) transformer.
This supplies the high voltage needed to accelerate the electrons that
scan the raster of the CRT image. Repairing it will cost more than
the TV is worth (prolly about $400).

When I was 15, instead of junking a TV that was as old as I was, I
tried a CHEAP home repair of the same problem by packing the
transformer shielding box with cement (to insulate the transformer
from the shielding box and maybe muffle the noise). I don't recall
that it worked.

Cheers(?)
