Fit larger disk to Sky+
A couple of months ago came across an article about fitting a larger
disk drive to a Sky+. It had a detailed description, complete with photos etc. as to how to do it. Now I can't find it on my laptop and my wife wants to get a Sky+ 160 instead of her 20gb. Can anyone point towards a (very) detailed way of doing this please? -- Mike Gasson (from the Isle of Purbeck) |

Check out the forums at digitalspy.co.uk. However, the process is pretty simple: 1. Turn off instant rewind 2. Unplug Sky+ box 3. Remove lid (need a special screwdriver for this) 4. Remove old hard disk (careful with the ribbon cable) 5. Fit new hard disk (make sure it's configured for cable select) 6. Do a full system reset (Services, 4 0 1 select. Then option 6 or 7 I think) 7. Wait until this is done 8. Do a few test recordings / playbacks 9. Reassemble box Andy |

Hi,

From reading some of the threads on digital spy there seems to be a
dilemma about the spindle speed of replacement HDs. The favourite seems to be the 5400rpm 160gig Maxtor, but these are hard to find and most HDs on the market are now 7200rpm. Are there any disadvantages to having 7200rpm? I don't mind the fan being on all the time when the box is on, but I'd like it to stop fanning whilst in Standby. |

A useful set of results in order to know which drives to avoid buying, but it says nothing about the lifetime and reliability of those drives which do work in a Sky+. Yes, that was purely a 'does it work or doesn't it' test. It has no bearing on the long term reliability of a drive. Andy |
