Urgent request - Sky+ available off-the-shelf?

My Sky+ box just died - probably from overheating.

I'm making a rare trip to London tomorrow, Friday (from outside the UK)
and I'm wondering if it's possible to buy a Sky+ box off-the-shelf,
i.e. with no installation requirement, so I can take it with me. If
possible, I'd really prefer a Sky+160, if available.

Also, can you give me an indication of the cost and any recommended
places in central London.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. - I've tried a full system reset - the box says "housekeeping" for
a few secs, then switches off, then nothing happens, so I assume it's
cactus.

T Court Road and buy a 160Mb disk.

Even some of the big chains have these in stock and specialist shops
certainly have them.

I suspect that all you need is a new drive.

Thanks for the help.

Regarding Jomtien's hard drive advice...

The signal strength meters both show unlocked, though nothing has moved
since the system crashed. Is this also a symptom of hard drive failure
or maybe the tuner's burnt out?

I'll try to buy another Sky+ off T Court Road today anyway. I live in
Switzerland, so they're in quite short supply out there and can always
move my old one on if I can fix it.

Don't bother. You can get one posted direct to your home country by
several UK wholesalers for much less than you will pay there.

Is it possible that the tuner and not the hard drive as failed, because
I get "unlocked" under signal test and the box at present cannot
download the EPG on startup. It just says "searching for channels" or
something on startup and nothing happens.

I'm no expert, but this doesn't sound like the hard drive.

I couldn't get a sky+ box yesterday, off T Court Road - All the smaller
places that sell boxes were closed on Sunday.

This means that I might as well try to fix the box before buying mail
order. I don't want to buy a new hard drive to find that the problem
was the tuner.

Any advice?

The solution is almost too embarrassing to tell.

I was watering the plants on the balcony this evening, when I noticed
that the sky dish had been moved a couple of degrees, hence the
problems. My missus swore blind that the box "crashed" when changing
channels and wouldn't restart. When I took a look there were no
channels to be found so I assumed that the tuner or hard drive had
burnt out.

Some fiddling with the dish and hey presto, everything workds fine.

Two morals of this story:
1) When your sky box goes wrong, start at the dish and work to the box
looking for problems with alignment, cable connections etc.
2) Wimmin are lying b'stards

Indeed.

If you had given this information in the first place you would have
had a completely different answer.
