Saw this USA device that looks interesting - also looks like one of those electronic devices that
could be cheaper or perhaps does not work!
Anyone got any experience of these or further info?

My dads old Toshiba VCR had a function called ALC which stood for Automatic
Limit Control I think. I think it was mainly for use when not all stations
were transmitting nicam so that when you changed from a nicam to a mono
channel and back the volume level was the same. It also worked at keeping
the volume on adverts the same too.

My Sony TV has auto-volume control that works just fine. Most decent
new TVs have this.

I also have a Sony which can do this. Don't like it much - particularly
bad when there is a musical soundtrack to a programme. It would be nice if
it were able to detect heavily compressed audio and only reduce the sound
for such input.

Auto volume control for adverts ......

The problem is that comercial broadcasters always increase the audio
compression during adverts - relative to the wanted programme - because
this sounds louder, and makes the adverts more "punchy".

(see: www.out-law.com/page-5907 ).

This is "illegal", but unstoppable, and the practice is pretty well
universal.

Adding automatic volume control to a domestic installation will partly
(not fully!) compensate for this. Some equipment already has "auto
level control" included. But, any such system takes time to react, and
the "audio pumping" effect can be more annoying than the original
problem.

Googling "domestic automatic volume control products" will get various
gadgets for sale. Note that, if done properly, this involves delay line
techniques, so the sound might then be out of sync with picture!
