What's happening with West Wing?

Is it only me, or has there been a missing series of West Wing?
Currently More4 are showing series 6, which started with Donna in
hospital after a car wreck, which I don't remember from the last series
which was shown on Channel 4. Also, S4 finished with the kidnap of
Bartlett's daughter and the temporary resignation of Bartlett in favour
of a Republican. I seem to have been asleep for an entire series.

Perhaps series 5 was all just a dream... :~)

Spoiler space for those who haven't seen the end of series 4 :-)

Series 4 ended with Zoe kidnapped and Bartlet standing down as
President to be replaced by Roseanne's husband, so I think you'd be a
lot more confused if you *had* missed an entire series :-)

E4 showed season 5 in Summer and Autumn 2004, now West Wing has moved to
More 4 so it shows Season 6 this Autumn, over two months later than E4
(and 12 months later than when Sky One showed it).

Channel 4 shows West Wing behind E4, so season 5 should start in a few
months, or maybe they'll just abandon it now E4 and More4 are free to
air.

I emailed C4 and they said basically they have the rights to show it but don't
know if/when they will. Probably a cunning plan to make all of us who missed it
go out and by the DVD set. Currently I am recording all S6 on my PVR :-)

There has been a missing series of _West Wing_. Go get series 5
on DVD.

Something's not quite right here :-)

In the Radio Times this week, someone wrote in to ask when S5 was going
to be shown on C4, the reply that RT got from C4 was that there were no
plans to show S5 on C4, basically because they no longer own the rights
to show it and have no interest in re-acquiring them. They went on to
say they had tried TWW in various time-slots but it had failed to engage
the interests of the viewers and they weren't prepared to devote 22
weeks of prime-time to it.

Complete with adverts. :-(

Get a Topfield. You can edit the adverts out on the box itself.
(Well, strictly speaking it doesn't get cut right to the frame you
specify, but it gets within a second and that's close enough for me.)

No, actually there are people in Channel 4 who are extremely ****ed off
about this. Basically, they bought the rights to series 5 and scheduled
it to show it ahead of the DVD release, with the DVDs coming out in the
week that the last show was broadcast. However, there was a fight about
scheduling another prime-time programme and they settled the fight by
simply replacing _West Wing_ with it.

I've heard two versions: either they didn't realise how early the DVD set
was going to be released, or the guy in charge thought that the other
series would attract so many viewers it didn't matter that _WW_ would get
only viewers who hadn't already bought the DVDs or pirated the shows off
of the internet. I don't know how much they paid for the broadcast
rights for series 5 but I'm guessing it was a lot and it's wasted.

Whatever happened, Channel 4 is now completely aware of DVD launch dates.
In fact, _West Wing_ played a part in the decision to launch More 4 (or
'mofo' as they like to call it) when they did.

I wish I could get that to work. Actually, I try it the other way,
I want to cut and save a small segment, (2 or 3 minutes) from a
longer programme, I press white then blue but it won't do it unless
I use FF, then it goes too far. I wish it worked on Play. Last
week I ended up losing the very piece I wanted to keep!

I agree it's fiddly. If I want a short clip, I play the original
recording, then press 'record' 15 seconds or so before the bit I want.
You've got to leave it run for at least a minute, but then pressing
'stop' puts up a message asking for confirmation; saying 'yes' gets
you a short 'COPY1' .rec file.
