And the boxes will not only have to work transparently, they'll have to

that's still selling VCRs and sub-£100 analogue-only tellys.

(The latter, of course, will continue working with "only" another £40
or £50 -- each -- for a crash-prone bit of kit....oh, and probably a
new aerial, too...)

Indeed! I know of four people who I have to visit to re-scan their DTT
boxes every time there is some sort of change. Three are pensioners and the
other is highly intelligent but completely uninterested in technology (but
enjoys the odd Freeview channel).

Sorry, but I do not understand how some retailers selling VCRs can delay
analogue TV switch off?

People buying at the cheap end of the market who continue to be sold
kit with analogue tuners -- TVs and VCRs alike -- will, I think, wind
up forming a fairly large block of voters. And they'll blame the
government when switch-off makes their fairly-recently-purchased kit
redundant (unless they stump up for an add-on box and aerial which --
given the cheapness of TVs and VCRs -- could wind up costing as much as
the kit they've bought within the last 4 or 5 years before switch-off.)

Actually, everything is going backwards! Advances in technology is
bringing with it the ability to fool the public that things are
getting better.
