HDTV, Please clarify.

OK so most of us now know about this technology but i am miffed as to how
some of the current crop of LCD / Plasma TV's can support this.

For example we bought a Samsung Rear Projection in April & on the front it
says HDTV 1080i but there is no HDMI socket on it, only the composite video
apart from scart etc..

I thought HDTV took advantage of a true digital connection through a HDMI
connection so now i am wondering if the Composite video connections will
take full advantage of the HD technology, somehow i think not & i was aware
of this sooner i might not have bought this TV.

Do you mean composite (one phono), or component (three phonos)? HDTV can
be transferred via component connections, and I guess that your set must
have these given its claims.

It does, if available.

so now i am wondering if the Composite video connections will
take full advantage of the HD technology,

If you mean component, you'll get a much-better-than-SD picture from an
HD device with component output. A digital connection via HDMI or DVI
would be slightly better still, of course.

Mmm. It's important to always read up before buying. However, I suspect
that you'll be OK.

Its not as simple as this. HDMI uses a type of content protection called
HDCP. Although I believe Sky have agreed a concession whereby their
first generation of HD boxes will output HD over componnt, in general
this will not be possible. For example, its widely anticipated that HD
DVD players will downgrade their component output to SD.
